Apple of My Pie (Romani Detective Original Fiction)
Title: Apple of My Pie
Fandom: Romani Detective original fiction
Pairing: James Rosewood + Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 508
Summary: It’s Andrej’s birthday so James and Zayne are procuring dessert.
Author’s Note: Written for the prompt of apple pie at comment_fic. And yeah, I diverted because, as much as I love a Dutch apple pie, Key lime will always be #1 in my heart (and belly).
“What are you doing with a pie,” Zayne asked, leaning over James’ shoulder and poking at the box.
“It’s for Andy’s birthday,” James defended. “And it’s apple, his favorite.”
“Apple’s not his favorite, narco,” Zayne said as if James should know this. Which he should, honestly.
“Yes, it is. See, it even has that crumbly stuff on top he likes.” The redhead pointed at the clear plastic viewing window in the center of the box. “We’ll need to get some ice cream on the way home, too.”
With what could only be described as an eye roll of epic proportions, Zayne sighed. “I thought you were more observant than that, red. Apple’s not his favorite, although he really does have a weak spot for that cinnamon crumb stuff.” And Zayne knew, oh how he knew.
James set the box down on the counter and looked at his secondary boyfriend. “Okay wise guy, if apple’s not his favorite pie, what is it?”
“Key lime,” Zayne said, with more than a little pride attached to that knowledge. “With whipped cream and not meringue.”
“I’d ask how you, the man who never notices anything knows this,” James said, a grin creeping onto his lips. “But then again, pie is food, so it’s no wonder you and your bottomless belly know the answer to this question.”
“He shared a piece with me once,” Zayne said, omitting the fact that it had been immediately after Andy’s first date with the redhead standing next to him. “It was rather shocking.”
“You’re positive that this isn’t his favorite?” James looked from the pie to Zayne’s handsome face and back again. “Maybe we should get a cake instead.”
“He hates cake,” Zayne said, taking the pie from James and handing it over to the cashier. “He only tells people apple is his favorite so that he doesn’t have to share his Key lime.”
“We have Key lime in the back,” the cashier said, watching the two arguing detectives. “Would you like one?”
“Please. One with no meringue if you have it,” Zayne said. Turning back to James, he grinned. “Don’t look at me like that, narco. This way, you and I might actually get some pie. One for us and one for our little boyfriend who pretends to have this oh so healthy lifestyle.” Because when it came to his favorite dessert, all thoughts of clean eating went right out of Andy’s head.
“Do you like apple, Zayne?” James had turned those baby blues onto the Texan and waited.
“I only like two kinds of pie, James: hot and cold.” Zayne snickered and winked at the cashier. “My mama likes to tell people I ate mud pies when I was a kid and that it all started there. I don’t buy it but…”
“…you can’t argue with your mother,” James finished for him. “And you can’t argue with two pies, either.”
“First smart thing you’ve said all day, red,” Zayne teased, taking the bag from the cashier. “And now, we have a birthday boy to surprise.”

I hope I do get a chance - maybe in Hawaii? it's not something I've seen in NZ. Funny about the lemon meringue - we'd have made a great pair as I'd rather have the meringue and NOT the pie!
Blackberry ANYTHING is pretty damned good, IMHO!
Ha! That's so funny about you and your sis! And yeah, what was the problem?

Agreed. Key lime might be my favorite pie, but blackberries are my favorite fruit by a long shot. My husband forwarded me a recipe for Key lime blackberry cupcakes that I might just have to make this weekend. :D
I think she was worried that we'd be left to FINISH the pie, too. Hahaha. Again, so what's the problem?
