Skittish (Code Red Original Fiction)
Title: Skittish
Fandom: Code Red
Pairing: gen
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 659
Summary: For someone who works with explosives, Dave is much too easily startled.
Author’s Note: Day late and a dollar short as always. Wrote this for last week’s weekend challenge. My prompt was ‘Based on how I react when toast pops out of the toaster, I will never look cool walking away from an explosion’. Wasn’t sure what to do with this at first and then it came to me…
For an explosives expert, Dave was the jumpiest person she knew. All Albie had done was bump into him from behind and the goofball jumped a mile. Ali was pretty certain her brother had done it on purpose, knowing the full extent of Dave’s frazzled nerves, but she couldn’t prove it.
“Are you okay,” she asked, speaking before putting a hand on his arm. The last thing she wanted was to scare him again.
Turning, Dave focused those dark brown eyes on her, watching before breaking into a big grin.
“I’m ‘kay,” he grumbled. “He’s going to die though.”
Ali smirked and winked at her brother. “Go easy on him,” she asked. “Albie’s trying to adjust to having a baby in the house. Since he can’t pick on Jo any longer, he’s got to direct it all at you.”
“He could direct some of it at you,” Dave said.
“Oh no,” Albie intervened. “I tried that once and that psychotic gun smuggler friend of hers tried to shoot my toes off.”
“He’s not a gun smuggler,” she lied, unsure of what to call Paulo that wouldn’t land her in a federal prison for life.
“Maybe not back when you were sixteen,” Albert said, leaving the rest unspoken.
He did have a point there, although Paulie was far from innocent even back then. She’d never asked exactly what he did figuring it was better to maintain that plausible deniability she heard so much about.
“Hey Dave,” Dusty shouted from a foot behind the brunette.
Seeing her brother’s best friend and long-time platonic life partner jump a foot, Ali smacked Dusty on the shoulder. “Will you not do that, you know how skittish he can be.”
“Yeah,” Dave said, giving the blond a look. “I do delicate work with dangerous things. It pays to be a little nervous.”
“You’re more than a little nervous,” Dusty muttered. “And you’ll never look cool walking away from an explosion, either.”
“Don’t have to,” Dave grinned. “I set ‘em up and watch from a distance while everyone else gets the crap scared out of them.” Shrugging, he pushed past Albie and Dusty and made his way out of the cafeteria.
“What’s eating him,” Dusty muttered.
“You two,” Ali said, shaking her head. “You both need to cut him some slack. Especially you, Dusty.”
“Me,” Dusty yelped. “Why me?”
“Because your partner isn’t the most stable wire in the bunch either,” she said, referring to Andrew Young, Dusty’s right hand man. Andy had been through something – not that any of them knew what it was, just that it had been traumatic – and was a little worse for the wear some days. Mostly, he was just a bit off in the best way possible.
“Yeah, well, you have a point there,” Dusty admitted.
“So be nice to Dave, would you?” She hated mothering these guys, but sometimes it needed to be done, if only for the sake of everyone’s sanity. Sometimes they listened and other times, well, they acted like her actual kids did when she told them to do something. It was always a tossup.
“Yes, moooom,” her brother teased. “Can we go eat now? I’m starving.”
“Yeah, of course,” she said. “You want to eat here or –”
“Nachos,” Dave said from right behind her, startling the hell out of Allyson.
“For the love of god, Dave,” she laughed. “I just go through lecturing these two about not scaring you and –”
“There you go,” Albie interrupted, “scaring the living daylights out of Ali. Nice job, buddy.” Albert held up his hand for a high five, getting a sound smack back from Dave.
Counting to ten in Gaelic, Ali resisted the urge to smack all three of their smiling faces. “I hate you all.”
“Nah,” Dusty laughed, pulling her into a side-hug. “You love us and your life would be excruciatingly boring without us.”
As much as she hated to admit it, he was right.
