Not on Your Life (Romani Detective Original Fiction)

Title: Not on Your Life
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/James Rosewood/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Summary: James is trying to pass the buck and Zayne’s having nothing to do with it.
Author’s Note: Written for the A to Z Challenge at 1_million_words. The letter today was N.

“Nope,” Zayne said, shaking his head. “Not going to do it and you can’t make me.”

“Please,” James asked, near to begging. “Just once?”

“Nyet,” Zayne retorted. “Not on your life.”

“And to think I used to like you, cowboy,” James said, sighing. “I wasn’t going to bring up all the things I’ve done for you lately, but you’ve left me no choice.”

“What the hell have you done for me lately, gingerbread? Nada.”

“You’re exaggerating again.”

“No I’m not.”

“Please?”

“To quote Zeklos, ‘nu’. Wanna find out how many other languages I can tell you to go to hell in?”

Du-te dracu,” Andrej corrected, passing through with a book in his hand. “Nu simply means no.”

“I know that, baby,” Zayne said, flashing his boyfriend a smile. “But my point was that I’m not doing the damn dishes for him again. I did them last night.”

“Okay, okay, fine,” James groaned. “I don’t know why you have to be so difficult but fine,” he said, drawing the last word out.

“You do not have to antagonize him,” Andrej said, looking over the top of his book, loving the twinkle he saw in Zayne’s green eyes.

“Yeah, but if I gave in or if I didn’t give him at least a little crap, he’d never stop,” Zayne said. “And I hate doing dishes.”

“As long as you take your turn, no one will make you do more than the other,” Andrej assured him. “No matter how much Jay hates doing dishes, too.”

“Thanks, baby,” Zayne said. “You ever notice how many variations o the word no start with ‘n’? No, nope, nada, nothing, nu, nyet… I’m sure there are more.”

“Non,” Andrej said, a slight French accent tickling his thicker, heavier Romanian one. “And I am sure there are more, but I am going to read my book. Do not make Jay any angrier.”

“Of course not,” Zayne said. “I’ll be good and sit here and look up other ways to tell him no.”

“That is not what I meant, but as long as you are behaving yourself, I am okay with it.”

“I promise,” Zayne said, chuckling.

“I do not believe you but I am tired of caring tonight.”

“Night, baby,” Zayne said. “And I promise, no more harassing the ginger. All of this is fodder for future arguments.”

“I am not sure that’s any better,” Andrej muttered. “But if I am going to get any reading done, I am going to have to trust you both.”

“Yeah, I don’t trust him much either,” James said, exiting the kitchen with a towel over his shoulder, “but I believe him this time. It’d be just like him to research ways to insult me.”

“Oh, now that’s not something I ever thought about. Nice one, narco.”

“I’m going to finish the dishes and then drive back to Utah,” James sighed. “It has to be less stressful than living with him.”

“Aw, I love you, too, gingerbread.”

“Not what I meant, cowboy,” James said, sounding defeated. “But I’ll take it.”
