Dark is the Night (Unnamed Original Vampire Fiction)

Title: Dark is the Night
Fandom: *sigh* Maybe I’ll figure that out if I ever finish the damn fic I started ten years ago
Pairing: Devyn + Ella
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 306
Summary: The darkness of the night brings memories of Devyn’s childhood… and other things.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words for the weekend of January 3, 2020. So yeah, I’m behind. My prompt was: Candlelight Carol. The lyrics came off as a bit dark to me, which brought me here.

Devyn stepped out of the bar and into the night. He looked to his left, then his right, before setting off down the sidewalk towards the small house he called his home. It was well past midnight and yet the darkness wasn’t oppressive, not like it had been when he was young.

In his defense, electric lights didn’t exist when he was a child either. Once the sun went down, you were shrouded in the utter blackness of night until the lamplighter found his way to your block. He’d learned to use the starlight to guide him and, later, how to help hide him from those he stalked.

Whistling, he quickly walked along the broken sidewalk, eager to get home. Ella had been behind the bar tonight, much as she was every night, looking lovely and smelling like something he wanted to devour.

She sometimes reminded him of his first victim, that timid young thing he’d chased through the streets of the small, Dutch town he’d been born in. The night had been one like this, cool, quiet, perfect for hunting. But the clouds had obscured the moon, making an ordinarily dark night even blacker. Despite the cloud cover, despite her natural cunning, he’d still caught her, drank from her.

He'd left her alive, however. Even in his early days, he hadn’t had the stomach for killing. Dehaan, as he’d been known back then, had taken what he’d needed and left her sleeping in a barn, safe from the other riffraff skulking about in the night.

Ella would be different, he told himself. He wouldn’t leave her sleeping in a barn. No, he wanted more than that from her. Forever? Maybe not that, but he wanted whatever she was willing to give him. The question now was, how did he get her to promise him anything?

Thank you!

It belongs to something I started writing back in oh... 2011? There are 3 or 4 chapters done and one day I would love to finish it. :)
