August Rush Day 16: Almost Human "Children"

Drabble written for Day 16 of the August Rush challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words.  Photo prompts are here.

Fandom: Almost Human
Pairings: John Kennex+Dorian+Unnamed OC
Rating: G for Good god why is she still doing this?
Summary: Kennex is outnumbered in his own vehicle.
Author's Notes: This has been exhausting but so much fun, too.  Am thankful this is the last week.  This is partially based on an actual conversation my then-boyfriend (now-husband) and I had in the parking lot of Target a good 24 years ago.  Almost triple drabble at 285 words.

“Are we there yet,” the voice asked from the back seat.

“No we are not there yet,” Kennex growled.  “Now shut up.”

Dorian looked at his partner, shaking his head.  “Always so grumpy, John.  You need more fiber in your diet.”

“I what?”  Kennex rolled his eyes and mentally counted to ten.  “I am not grumpy.”

“Actually,” the guy in the rear of the car interjected, “you kinda are.  I only asked how much longer –”

“I swear to god, if you ask me that one more time –”

“Maybe he’s overly eager to return to jail, John.  Statistically, long-term offenders often commit a crime within days of being released because they know no other life than that of the prison.”

Kennex focused on the road in front of him.  “If the two of you do not shut up immediately, I’m going to put you both out on the side of the road and leave you there.”

“Even the criminal,” Dorian asked.

“Even me,” echoed the criminal.

“Yes, even him,” Kennex stated. “At the rate he’s going, it won’t be long before someone else picks him up and puts him away.”

Dorian pondered this for a moment. “You are correct.  However, you can’t leave me.”

“Wanna bet?”

“That’s not what I meant, John,” he clarified.  “You can pull over and force me out of the vehicle, but you’ll never be able to drive away without me.”

He thought he heard a touch of smugness in the android’s voice and then swore he was imagining things.  “How about you keep it up and we find out?”

Opening his mouth to reply, Dorian immediately thought better and closed his jaw.

“Well whaddaya know, he can be taught.”
