Because his bookmarks keep slipping out of his choir hymnal, 3M scientist Art Fry teamed up with colleague Spencer Silver to create a paper with a light adhesive that would stay in place without damaging the pages. They created the Post-it Note.

What's even more amusing is that half the time I'm using a Post-It Note as a bookmark.  Hah.

HA! I remember this from Romy & Michele's High School Reunion! Not the book mark for a hymnal, but that it was 2 guys from 3M.

I do enjoy that movie, and it was my graduating class as well. Alan Cumming was fabulous!

I heard this as a Scottish Festival — Someone had asked 3M to make a transparent tape for them and when they were presented it, the product wasn't what they wanted, they were apparently looking for something more substantial, something not as cheap. And said "You take your damn Scotch tape back to your damn Scotch owners and you tell them..." And thus Scotch tape was born. It could be a myth, but it's a cute story.
