Once More (Almost Human Fic)

Title: Once More
Fandom: Almost Human
Pairing: John Kennex/Dorian
Rating: T
Warnings: Angst.  Major character ‘death’, so to speak.
Word Count: 548
Summary; Kennex and Rudy are faced with a tough decision, one neither wants to make.
Author’s Note: Prompt from Comment Fic was as such: Almost Human, Dorian, deactivated.  And now I hate myself.

“Are you sure?”  Kennex’s voice broke slightly on the last word, the only sign of weakness he’d allow himself to show.

Rudy nodded. “Yes, I’m positive.  I’ve done everything I can think of, but his neural system is fried, John.  Ten thousand volts of electricity would do that to any synthetic, no matter how strong or well-made.”

“You can’t fix him,” he asked, nearly begging.  “Maybe not enough to work as my partner, but maybe just enough that he could still be my… friend?”

This time, Rudy shook his head.  “I’m afraid not, Detective.  I could repair him but he’d never quite be Dorian ever again.”

That wasn’t acceptable.  Kennex looked away from Rudy’s devastated face, the loss of Dorian hitting him as much as it was himself.  “Then do it,” he said, unable to use the actual word.

Deactivate.

Not Dorian, no that word shouldn’t have ever needed to be used in his presence ever again, but here they were, staring down at his inactive form.  John touched his fingers to the DRN’s cheek, caressing the soft skin, wishing he could see that brilliant smile one last time.

Once more, John, he’d asked minutes before the jolt had hit him.  Just one more kiss before you go.

No, he wouldn’t think about it, not now.  Probably not ever again, even though he knew that was a lie.  He’d think about those last minutes forever and never be able to change anything.  He traced a small pattern on that cocoa colored cheek again, lifting his fingertips at the very last moment.

“John,” Dorian whispered.

Cocking his head, Kennex leaned down, bringing his ear near to the DRN’s lips.  “Dorian?  What is it?”  The urge to tack ‘baby’ onto that sentence was almost too much.  He swallowed the pet name down, feeling harsh and rough in his throat.

“Thank you,” he breathed.  “For giving me a chance.”

“You crazy DRN,” he murmured, a hitch in his voice.  “It was my pleasure.”

Kennex decides to fulfill Dorian’s last request for one last kiss.  Pressing his lips to the DRN’s, he feels the tears well up, the defeat and depression and emptiness filling him.  Pulling away, he nods at Rudy.  “Please.”

Twining his fingers with Dorian’s, he held on tightly while Rudy did what had to be done.  Neither was okay with any of this, but they saw no other alternative.  When the last bits of energy had drained, Kennex disengaged himself from the now idle DRN, placing the hand he’d held gently on the synthetic’s abdomen.

“John,” Rudy said, breaking the silence, eyes wet with unshed tears.  “I promise you, I will find a way.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” he snorted, anger taking the place of the desolation he felt.  John left Rudy to tend to Dorian – no, the DRN – on his own.  Unable to stay any longer, he left the building and stood on the street, watching the traffic pass.  As much as he wanted to have faith, hoping that Rudy could find a way to restore Dorian to him was too much to believe in.

But then, he never believed that he could work with a synthetic like Dorian to begin with, and look where they had ended up?  Maybe… just maybe, there was a chance.

Aw.

A really nice piece of writing here. I still will remain amazed that you put that much emotional punch in a 'two-bites and its gone' size fic.

Nooooooooooo! Say it isn't so!

Beautifully written though, my dear. All too easy to imagine this reaction to Dorian's deactivation.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

Seriously, you need to stop making me fall in love with all these fandoms. First Common Law and then your Original Boys and now Almost Human... Who'd have thought I'd become a multi-shipper this late in life? :DDD

This was wonderful! Just the right amount of angst and hope, hurt/comfort and tragedy. I love it!
