Like the Rain (Romani Detective Original Fiction)

Title: Like the Rain
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 696
Summary: Andy likes to watch the rain and no one understands why.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words. My prompt was spring: rain. And now I’m on a Clint Black listening spree…

“Why are you standing in the rain,” Zayne asked, slipping his body through the sliding glass door.

“I am not standing in the rain,” Andrej replied, not looking at his boyfriend. “I am standing under cover watching the rain.”

Zayne looked up and smiled at the sound of the downpour hitting the metal awning that covered their patio. “Okay, so I revise and resubmit my question – why are you standing out here watching the rain?”

He finally turned to look at Zayne. It was obvious that he’d just rolled out of bed, still dressed in a pair of burnt orange sweats and no shirt, hair mussed in a way that was only sexy on Zayne. If he closed his eyes, Andrej was sure he could smell the scent of Zayne’s cologne on his skin.

“I miss it,” he said simply. “It rains a lot at home and almost never here.”

“It rains a lot where I’m from, too, but I can’t say that I miss it all that much,” Zayne said, moving closer. “Hurricanes are a bitch.”

Andrej smiled. “I never want to go through something like that,” he said. It was another reason he’d left New York and moved west. Too many tropical storms on top of way too much snow. He was happy with the searing heat of the desert, something not many people understood.

“Yeah, it’s not any fun,” Zayne replied. “It is kinda nice out here though, cool and a little humid, but not enough to make you hate breathing.”

“You do not have to stay with me,” Andrej said, looking back out at the yard, grey sky rumbling above him.

“It’s okay,” Zayne said. “I kind of like it like this. Quiet, calm, even with the rain coming down like it is.” He shrugged. “Don’t know if that makes any sense.

A rumble of thunder rolled through the valley followed by a bright flash of lighting. The rain started to come down a little harder than before.

“Okay,” Zayne said, sliding an arm around Andrej’s waist. “Maybe we ought to go back inside now? The narco will never forgive me if I let you get sick.”

Turning his face towards Zayne, Andrej smiled. “I will not get sick,” he said. “I am not going into the rain, no matter how much I might want to stand in it.”

“Yeah, bringing you inside sopping wet would definitely get me into trouble, so thank you for that.”

“What the hell are you two doing,” James voice asked from the doorway.

“We’re watching the rain,” Zayne said, giving Andrej a squeeze.

“You two are nuts,” he snorted. “I’m going to make a coffee run. Everyone want their usual?”

“Please,” Andrej said.

“Hot chocolate for me,” Zayne added. “It’s a hot chocolate kind of day.”

“It’s a weirdo kind of day,” James joked. “But if that’s what you want, cowboy, you’ve got it.”

James retreated back into the house, leaving Zayne and Andrej watching the rain.

“Ya know,” Zayne said after a minute, “I always hated the rain, but the longer I stand here, the more I can see why you like it.” He gave a soft chuckle. “Reminds me of an old song.”

“Doesn’t everything remind you of a song, Zayne?”

“Sometimes,” he admitted.

“Is it a good song, a happy one,” Andrej asked.

“Yeah, today it’s a very good song,” Zayne said.

The wind picked up and whipped drops of water into their faces.

“Maybe you and Jay are correct and we should go inside.”

“Maybe for a bit,” Zayne agreed. “You know what I was thinking,” he asked, opening the door and allowing Andrej to enter the house first.

“What, Zayne?”

“That we need a swing or something out here. I mean, if you want to watch the rain, that would be the best way.”

“I think you may be correct,” Andrej said, kissing Zayne lightly. “I will put it on my list of things to be done. Thank you.”

Zayne touched Andrej’s face, wiping away a few remaining specks of water. “Anything for you.”

The song that came to mind while writing this is Clint Black’s Like the Rain

LMAO... YouTube, you're killing me right now... of all the songs to pick to play next...

I can see Andy doing this. Sometimes I watch the rain when Daisy lets me.

That's one of my favorite Clint Black songs. :)

It's something I do pretty much anytime it rains since we get so little of it. Sadly, I go and stand IN it usually, so Andy at least has more sense than I do (although that doesn't take much).

Mine, too. He's always been a favorite of mine.

I don't know if I know that Cling Black song. I do like "Good Run of Bad Luck" though. This was sweet and absolutely something I could see Andy doing.

*giggles* I gather the cowboy song was the next one?

It's a good one, one of my favorites. Hah - I love that, one, too, because it reminds me of the movie Maverick with James Garner and Mel Gibson - Clint gets tossed off the riverboat for cheating in the card game.

Oh yeah, I'm prepping to post and I hear that distinctive opening refrain and started laughing. Good thing I was alone at the time.

I listened to it or at least a few minutes of it. I liked it.

LOL I haven't seen Maverick in years. It reminds me of the Gambler.

Hahaha that's hysterical. :-)

You can't go wrong with Clint Black. :)

Yeah, I have a copy on VHS, I think. But it was such a good movie. Ah, The Gambler - another good one.

Nope probably not. :-)

Aaaww I might have seen it once... years ago.

I used to have the Gambler... but most of my VHS tapes got ruined.

I got rid of most of mine, but I held onto a handful for sentimental reasons. Things like my copy of Top Secret. LOL

Aaaww that's cute. I have no way to play them. And when we had a flood a few years ago most of mine got wet and therefore ruined.
