Horsin' Around (Preying Eyes Original Fiction)

Title: Horsin’ Around
Fandom: Preying Eyes Original Fiction
Pairing: Adrien Lupei/Elliot Deacon
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,080
Summary: Adrien is out for a ride and gets pulled over by the Tucker Police Department
Author’s Note: Written for the February Bing at 1_million_words. I picked one of the movement cards and my prompts were: pivot, back up, caress, and paw at. I have a feeling Andy can relate.

Adrien felt himself fall into the rhythm of the horse below him. Mabel had always been his favorite and he was grateful his mother had decided to keep her despite the mare’s advancing age. One of the things he hated about touring was not being able to get out and ride like he used to, so today was a real treat. Leaning forward, he rubbed his hand along the lean length of Mabel’s blonde neck.

“You’re such a good girl,” he said, grinning when she turned her head back to look at him. She snorted and shook her head giving Adrien a laugh.

One of these days, he was going to have to get Elliot out riding with him. Even though Elliot said that there was no way in hell he’d ever get on the back of a horse, Adrien was relatively confident he could persuade him. Or bribe him, as the case may be. The blip of a siren startled Adrien, causing him to look back over his shoulder. Seeing a Tucker police cruiser rolling along behind him gave him a moment of panic. He tugged on Mabel’s reins and pulled her farther into the grassy area lining the road, coming to a stop about two feet in.

The cruiser pulled to a stop behind them and an officer emerged from either side. “Good morning,” the driver said.

“Good morning,” Adrien replied, confused as to what was going on here. “Can I help you officers?”

“You’re in violation of the traffic laws,” the other officer said.

“Traffic laws?”

“Yes,” the driver, an older guy with blond hair and a scraggly moustache said. “No vehicles incapable of maintaining a minimum of thirty-five miles per hour are allowed on this road. You were going approximately sixteen miles per hour.”

Adrien resisted the urge to laugh at the officer. Mabel was annoyed, she scuffed her hoof against the ground, begging to get moving again. “Easy girl,” he said, giving a gentle tug on her reins to steady her. He returned his attention to the officers. “First of all, she’s not a vehicle, she’s a horse. Second of all, we haven’t been in the street, we’ve been keeping to the side path. The asphalt’s not good for a horse, especially not an ancient one like Mabel here.”

Mabel turned her head and gave Adrien the stink eye.

“Don’t look at me like that , blondie, you know you’re getting up there.” He shook his head and turned back to the men detaining him. “I’m sorry, gentlemen. We were just out for a ride.”

“That right there confirms it,” the second, younger officer said. “Ride. Self-powered vehicle.”

“She’s not… oh, god, never mind.” Adrien scrubbed a hand across his face and sighed. He wondered what these two idiots would do next. Impound his horse? Give him a ticket? The older officer moved towards them, striding purposefully, causing Mabel to take a few quick steps backwards. “Officer, please, move more slowly. You’re frightening my Mabel.”

He didn’t slow and Mabel got antsy, stepping back then turning to head back towards home. “Woah, Mabel,” Adrien said, turning her back around. “Stop that or they’re going to think we’re trying to flee.” It took a couple minutes, but he managed to get her to calm down and stop trying to bolt.

“Don’t make me arrest you both,” the officer warned.

Adrien gave him a mental eye roll. “Sir, I asked you to not approach so aggressively. She’s an old horse with a history of abuse behind her. Skittish doesn’t even begin to describe how she can be when she’s being confronted like this.”

The officer ignore him and wrote in his ticket book. Was he really going to get a ticket for walking his damn horse down the side of the road? Elliot was going to have a field day with him later. His mother, on the other hand, would likely give Damon Garces an earful, but that wasn’t his fault and he’d deal with Elliot’s partner later if he had to.

“Don’t let us catch you two out here again,” the officer said, handing Adrien the ticket. “You can’t flaunt the law, son.”

He watched them climb back into the car and drive off. Mabel showed her teeth at the cruiser as it drove by and Adrien laughed. “I feel the same way, girl. And by the way, you are no self-powered vehicle, you’re my girl, aren’t you?”

She bobbed her head up and down in agreement and took off at a slow trot at Adrien’s cue. The ride home was pleasant and uneventful, unlike the first half of their trip.

“You what,” Elliot said, not able to process the information Adrien was giving him.

Aleja held the ticket out. “He’s not lying, he got a damn ticket riding Mabel down the side of Main Street.”

“Oh holy Moses,” Elliot groaned. “Give it to me and I’ll take it in to my captain and see if there’s anything I can do about it.”

“It’s not a big deal,” Adrien said. “I can afford to pay it.”

“I know you can,” Elliot said, kissing Adrien’s face. “But the point is, this is goddamned Tucker, not Nashville or Memphis. Do you have any idea how many people I see riding when I’m out during the day?" He shook his head. “Hell, I saw some teenager walking their pig past the station house the other morning. She was taking him down to see Doc Baker for his checkup.”

Adrien gave in. He knew Elliot was trying to help him out, so he’d let him. “Okay, but if you can’t do anything, don’t push it.”

“Promise,” Elliot said. “If nothing else, we need to get that law clarified. I know it was put into place because of the popularity of motorized scooters and things, but this is ridiculous.”

“Especially since I know old Mabel can still get up to thirty-five if she wanted to,” Aleja added with a grin. “Adrien just didn’t have the heart to kick her into overdrive.”

“With my luck, I’d give the poor girl a heart attack, mama,” Adrien joked. “God, I can’t believe this even happened. I used to ride down that way all the time.”

Elliot laughed. “It’s not a big deal, but I swear to god, only you could get pulled over on a fucking horse.”

“Yanno,” Adrien said, accepting a plate of food from his mother. “I used to like you, El.”
