Belly Up
While Troy's recuperating, I've been trying to get through some of my Netgalley books. Good news: I only have one left that publishes in April (tomorrow, actually, oops) and then the next doesn't publish until May 21st. Score! I'm almost caught up.
Anyway, what I've been reading is this:

I don't read too much YA, but this appealed to me because something like 75% of my female friends in high school had babies. I was not one of them, but even so, the subject hit close to home. (Side note: a party for a pregnant friend is what actually got Troy and I together in the first place so...)
Blurb:
There’s a first time for everything.
First time playing quarters.
First time spinning the bottle.
First totally hot consensual truck hookup with a superhot boy whose digits I forgot to get.
First time getting pregnant.
Surprised you with that one, didn’t I?
Surprised me, too. I’d planned to spend senior year with my bestie-slash-wifey, Devi Abrams, graduating at the top of my class and getting into an Ivy League college. Instead, Mom and I are moving in with my battle-ax of a grandmother and I’m about to start a new school and a whole new life.
Know what’s more fun than being the new girl for your senior year? Being the pregnant new girl. It isn’t awesome. There is one upside, though—a boy named Leaf Leon. He’s cute, an amazing cook and he’s flirting me up, hard-core. Too bad I’m knocked up with a stranger’s baby. I should probably mention that to him at some point.
But how?
It seems I’ve got a lot more firsts to go.
The best part about this book is that it's written in a very light-hearted style, even when Sara is dealing with heavy issues. Things like telling her mom she's pregnant and whether she wants to keep the baby or not. I love Sara's voice and her whole attitude. She's scared, she's freaking out, but she knows her family has her back, so it'll be okay in the end.
Now, the reason why I'm even here right now is Leaf. Sara is half Swedish, half Spanish, and feels like the poster child for diversity living in the suburbs of Connecticut. So, when she meets Leaf that first time, she's drawn to him - his dark hair, his dark skin, his big smile. But even better? He's not what you'd think - he's not Hispanic.
HE'S FREAKING ROMANI.

I about tossed my Kindle when I read that, I kid you not. Even better is that when he introduced himself, he said "Leaf, like a leaf on the wind" and Sara immediately responded with, LIKE ON FIREFLY? Hah. Total geek out right now.
(And now I desperately want to finish this so I can read The Princess and the Fangirl - the sequel to Geekerella. But I digress. Rapidly and often.)
Okay, okay, I'm going back to my book now. BUT I HAD TO SHARE THAT. I don't often run into Roma in any of the novels I read (and I read across most genres), so this was a pleasant surprise. Leaf's nothing like Andy but I LOVE HIM ALREADY.
Oh - and if you like dark fiction with a mystery mixed in, you have got to read Little Darlings by Melanie Golding. SO DAMN GOOD GUYS. I can't even express myself right now. And I don't generally get this worked up over something I've read. Hahaha.
Um, as you were?

One of the authors I follow/know just lost her contract with a big publisher. *sighs* I dunno what that's going to do to her book prices.
Yeah I can deal with that also...but 14.99 for a Kindle book? Nope not happening.
no subject
Right? That's outrageous for something you can't even physically own.
no subject
It's CRAZY! Not only for a book you can't hold in your hands, but for a YA book.
So I have a B&N gift card... and I should be getting an Amazon gift card... and I need to figure out what I want to do with them.

Ugh, I like reading YA, but they tend to read faster than say an adult fantasy novel, so it's annoying. I love Janet Evanovich but I burn through her Plum books so fast that I won't generally even buy them - I borrow them from the library.
Oh nice! I just bought A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet this morning because it was $1.99. LOL

They really do read faster. I'm reading some YA now. I bought (well, Mommy bought) some new books for my classroom so I'm reading them so I can recommend them to kids next year. Oh, I do the same things with the Plum books. So not worth spending money on.
Niiiceee! I'm not sure I'll buy books because I have SO many to read. I'm tempted to hold onto the Amazon one and buy the Killjoys Blu-Ray when it gets released.

That's a good way to do it. A friend of mine is a 5th grade teacher and she always asks her students for recs and she'll read the books and discuss them in class. It's a great thing to do when you're a teacher.
Yeah, well, we won't get into that because I have too many books and yet I bought a book and an audiobook today so... Ah, which season? I love Killjoys.
no subject
Yeah my kids don't read enough (for the most part) for me to ask them for recs. So I'm hoping some of the ones I bought will spark some interest.
Hahaha I hear that. I've got two on pre-order. Probably season 5? Once it airs and they put it out. OMG how did I not know you love Killjoys?? I adore the boys! Johnny is my boi! And Lucy! Heee I adore Johnny and Lucy's relationship. And Dutch is so badass! D'avin... oh sweetie it's a good thing you're pretty. *pets him*
Anyway I'm pretty sure I have 1-4 already. I have to check because everything is kinda scattered right now.

God, after the way this last season ended, we need the new one ASAP. But yes - Johnny's relationship with Lucy is the best thing ever. And I got a good laugh this weekend. My husband (yes, it was his choice) was watching a movie on Hallmark and the guy who plays D'avin was the romantic lead. He was playing a chef and I told my husband, "Guess being a space cowboy doesn't pay as well as they thought."
I'm thinking of ordering H50 Season 8 because I was halfway through it when CBS took it all off Netflix. Ticked me off.
It's a great show. We binged the last two seasons while I was at home taking care of Troy.

*flails* Yes! But they haven't released the date yet. Which is ridiculous. And it has been confirmed this is it. I wanna draw hearts all over Johnny and Lucy. Is it bad that I'm kinda hoping they give Lucy a body so Johnny and her can be together in the end?
OMG I'VE SEEN THAT MOVIE! And there was an article with Luke (who by the by is gay which is the most adorable thing ever) just before it aired and he said he loves doing Hallmark movies because he doesn't get punched in the face!
They did? OH NO! I missed that! UGH!
Heee I watch them when they air with a friend of mine (via email because although we live on the same coast, we're at opposite ends). And we gossip through the whole show.

Hah, it was actually really cute and I love his reasoning. Really? I had no idea. He's adorable though.
Yeah, I was none too pleased either. But, I found season 8 on DVD pretty cheaply on Amazon and it's sitting on my desk at home waiting to be watched.
That sounds like a fun viewing party!

It was cute. Right? He had the best reasoning. Yup, I can't remember the interview, but yeah he talked about it. He is adorable! *pets him* But D'avin is pretty and not too smart.
Sweet! I mean I've seen most of them, but I was thinking about a rewatch.
It is a lot of fun! We do the same with Legends.
no subject
ROFL D'avin is everything most 'heroes' are. But that's okay because he has Johnny.
I love a good rewatch. I hope you get to do it soon.
no subject
He really is. *pets him* Of course he has Johnny... if only they weren't brothers... I could so ship a 3some. But Johnny and Lucy are my OTP on there.
Yeees, but it won't happen for a bit...

I'm excited and a bit scared because I see the new season of Big Little Lies has started. Really enjoyed the first one, but am nervous for this one.
no subject
Aaaww that's not fun. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you end up enjoying it.
no subject
Eh, it's all good. I think the author was involved in writing the script for season 2, so it should hopefully be good.
no subject
Oh, that's always awesome!

I agree. :)
