August Book Recap
I both feel like I read a lot and also not as much as I thought I had read. Weird, no?
What I read:
A Whole Latte Murder by Caroline Fardig. Java Jive Mysteries #3. Audiobook. I still love this series, but man did the author play dirty with Juliet and Ryder’s relationship. Not to mention she turned Ryder into an absolute jerk. That better get fixed in the next one.
Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley. Deep Dish Mysteries #1. E-ARC. This was one of the best cozies I’ve read in a long time. While it hit on a lot of the usual cozy tropes, at least the detective wasn’t a punk to Delilah from the get-go. I’m excited to see where the series goes.
The Prisoner by B. A. Paris. E-ARC. I really enjoyed this, but I always (almost) enjoy her books. She has a great way of really twisting reality to make you wonder what’s really going on. This releases in November, I think, and if you like psychological thrillers, you might like this one.
The Separation by K.D. Edwards. The Tarot Sequence #0.1. PDF freebie. I shouldn’t even count this since it was four pages long, but… here we are. Found this while looking into a series someone else has been reading. Discovered it was free on the author’s website and decided it was an easy way to see if I was going to like the author’s style and voice. Am going to have to look into the series now.
Dial A for Auntiesby Jesse Q Sutanto. Aunties #1. E-library loan. What a ridiculous cozy mystery/romance. But my god did I laugh my butt off. It was bordering on Abbot and Costello levels of silly at times, but was exactly what I needed. It was also interesting to see the interactions between Meddy, her mom, and her aunts, all of whom are immigrants.
Angels Flight by Michael Connely. Harry Bosch #6, Bosch Universe #7. Audiobook e-loan. Yes, my library loves me. Harry’s up to his eyeballs again, but as usual, he figures it all out. I’m really starting to like his new partner, Kiz, as well. She’s smart and keeps Jerry Edgar in line. LOL Not a fan of the narrator for this book though. Interesting side note: Angels Flight (the railway) appeared in the newest episode of Bobby and Sophie on the Coast – a show on Food Network with Bobby Flay and his daughter.
Hold Me Closer, Toni Danzig by Laura Henry. Audible audiobook. This was a quick, 3 hour audiobook I grabbed from the Audible Plus Catalogue while I was waiting for my loan of A Darkness More Than Night by Michael Connelly. Super cute little f/f love story. Was not expecting the sex scene near the end though, talk about hitting the skip button! No judgement, but I do not know how people listen to romance audiobooks! Hahaha.
What I’m currently reading:
A Darkness More Than Night by Michael Connelly. Harry Bosch #7, Bosch Universe #9 (I think). Audiobook library loan. So far, this narrator has been better, but his Bosch voice makes Harry sound like Ed Asner. Also, Terry McCaleb features in this one, too. It’s been a bit weird because this book is also the basis for part of season 3 of Bosch, which I’m watching right now.
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas. Print. This is a gothic horror/mystery novel set in Mexico in the early 1800’s. Slow to start, but the spooky has finally started about 65 pages in. As you can see, Violet is also enjoying this spooky book.

My Wife is Missing by D. J. Palmer. Ebook. A psychological thriller/mystery. I read one of his books a coupe years ago – The New Husband – and enjoyed it. So, I grabbed this from Netgalley when it was available. So far, I am very underwhelmed by it. I’m only like 10% in at the moment, but I am bored to tears. Praying it picks up by the 25% mark or it’s going in the digital bin.
What’s up next:
I really need to get some of these books off my ‘currently reading’ shelf on Goodreads. Some of them have been sitting there for a very long time. LOL
Of my current stash, I would like to read:
Husband Material by Alexis Hall. The follow-up to Boyfriend Material.
Lie to Me by Tess Gerritsen. The newest installment in the Rizzoli & Isles series. I’ve waited YEARS for this.
Void Moon by Michael Connelly. I accidentally skipped this when I looked at my list of Bosch books. Oops.
After that, I’m not sure. Trying to get some print books read and out of the house, but we’ll see how well that goes.

I love cozies and this one had great characters.
I did, thank you! Picked the right books for my mood, it seems.

Aw. :) And now that I've finished the book, her pensive expression makes more sense. :)
