Title: Another Day in the Desert
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/James Rosewood/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,052
Summary: It’s hot as hell and neither Zayne nor James are enjoying the yardwork.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words. My prompt was: Hotter than H-E double hockey sticks. Note: Zayne teases James for being LDS and swearing. This isn’t to poke fun at the LDS, but more a fond memory of an LDS friend of mine in high school. I went through school from 5th grade through graduation with her and her twin sister and never once heard either of them swear.
“Damn,” James groaned, wiping a hand across his forehead. “It’s hot as hell out here.”
“Hey now,” Zayne said, pointing a finger at the redhead. “I thought LDS weren’t supposed to swear.”
“Fine,” James said, squinting in the direction of his boyfriend. “It’s hot as h-e-double hockey sticks. That better, asshole?”
Zayne snorted and turned back to fixing the sprinkler that someone had broken. “Real nice, gingerbread.”
“I’m going to be ginger toast if I’m out here much longer,” James grunted. “Even with that SPF 4000 that Andy bought, I’m still going to burn.”
He looked up at the redhead and frowned. “You’re a little pink, why don’t you go back inside?”
“I can help you finish first,” James said. Last thing he wanted was to be accused of skipping out on his chores.
“Come inside, Jay,” Andrej called from the sliding glass door that led into the backyard. “I am back, and I can help Zayne. I do not want you to burn.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am positive,” Andrej said, waving James towards the door. “I love you, but I do not want to ever have to give you another vinegar bath ever again.”
Laughing, James gave Andrej a sweaty kiss as he went inside. “Aw, but being sponged clean was so much fun.”
“Even though you smelled like an Easter egg for three days after, narco?”
“Go to hell, Reyes,” James shot back teasingly. “Not all of us are blessed with such sun proof skin.”
“It’s not sun proof,” Zayne said. “Believe me, I can burn, it just takes a hell of a lot longer for me than you.”
“He is right,” Andrej added, stepping out into the sunlight. “Although I am darker skinned than you are, I received a pretty nasty burn my first summer here. I was apparently not appropriately prepared for the scorching desert sun.”
“Yeah, you at least have clouds in Romania,” Zayne laughed. “Here, not so much. Bright, sunny sky twenty-four seven.”
“And rain,” Andrej said, peering up at the swath of big, blue sky above him. “Lots and lots of rain. It is one of the few things I miss about home.” Rain and the home-brewed plum brandy his father used to make. The stuff he had imported just wasn’t the same, even if one shot was enough to knock both of his boyfriends on their backsides.
“Yeah, well, give it two weeks and you’ll have more rain than you want,” James said. “Monsoon season is on the horizon.”
“I thought you were going to go inside and ice your balls or something, Rosewood,” Zayne snapped.
Trying his hardest not to laugh, Andrej looked over at where Zayne knelt by the mesquite tree that shaded the back yard. “Did you get the sprinkler fixed?”
“I did,” Zayne said. “Haven’t gotten to anything else yet though.”
“That thing was a bitch and a half,” James added.
“There ya go, swearing again,” Zayne teased. “Tsk, tsk.”
“Come inside, Zayne,” Andrej said. “The rest can wait until tomorrow morning when it is cooler.”
Zayne frowned. “Are you sure? You said –”
“I know,” Andrej interrupted. “I was hoping that I could come back and help you guys get it done today, but with Jay on the verge of heatstroke and you getting grumpier by the second, it can wait.” He waved a hand at the house. “The sprinkler was the main thing as I do not want my flowers to die in this heat.”
“Whelp,” Zayne said, rising to his feet and dusting off his legs. “They’re about the only thing that’s going to survive this heat.”
“Come inside, Zayne,” Andrej said, scooting past James and going inside. “I will have something cold for you both.”
“You don’t think he’s going to ice his own balls, do you,” Zayne asked James.
“I am not,” Andrej shouted from inside the house. “Nor will I either.”
“Well, there goes that plan,” Zayne laughed as he held the door open and ushered the redhead inside. “Guess we’ll have to go with plan B.”
“What’s plan B,” James asked.
“Whatever works,” Zayne grinned, stepping forward and taking an ice-cold beer from Andrej. “And this is an excellent start.”
“Can’t argue with that,” James agreed, taking the bottle Andrej was now offering him.
“Whatever you two decide,” Andrej said, “it had better not involve sitting on my furniture until you have both had a shower.” He grabbed a paperback off the bookshelf and headed towards his bedroom.
“Does that include your sheets,” Zayne called after him.
“Yeah, I mean, we can wash those, right,” James added.
Zayne looked at the redhead. “He didn’t answer.”
“Which means he also didn’t say no.” James glanced in the direction Andrej had disappeared. “What do you think?”
“I think we ought to go see if we get kicked out,” Zayne said, polishing off his beer and setting the bottle on the counter. “You?”
“I think that for once you’re on the right track, cowboy.” James handed him his empty bottle and Zayne added it to the collection forming on the counter. He turned and headed off down the hallway. “Not sure this is going to cool either of us off but…”
“But, it’s a risk worth taking,” Zayne said, grinning.
“Where is he,” James asked, looking around the bedroom and not seeing Andrej.
“I am in here,” he called.
They stepped into the large master bathroom and grinned.
“It’s hot out, Zek,” Zayne pointed out. “Why are you running a bath?”
“It is a cool bath,” he said. “Not too hot, but not cold either. It is exactly what you two need.”
“Only if you’re getting in with us,” James said.
“If you two behave I will,” Andrej said. “Now strip and get into the bath.”
Without hesitation, they obeyed and were naked and in the tub in record time. Andrej folded his arms and watched them for a moment, dipping their hands into the water and wetting each other’s heads. He waited until he could see the natural color return to James’ face, the flush leave Zayne’s cheeks, before he stripped and joined them. It was going to take him an hour to clean his bathroom after this but he was relatively certain it was going to be worth every swipe of the sponge.
