Author's Note: Written for the A to Z Challenge at 1_million_words. The letter was J so I went with the obvious.
“You’re a damn liar, Reyes.”
Zayne turned towards the sound of the voice and frowned at the uniform approaching him. “What did I lie about now,” he asked. He didn’t really care, to be quite frank, but he was curious.
“I thought you said weren’t into redheads,” Officer Morgan asked, trying for casual and coming off nosy. He waved towards the hallway where James had just disappeared. “Obviously, that’s a lie.”
Zayne glared at him, barely resisting the urge to punch the dude. “I don’t think I ever said that, Morgan. Now, I may have said I prefer brunettes,” he added, smiling at Morgan’s partner, a tough, young female officer with a no-nonsense attitude. “But gingers aren’t completely off the list, pal.”
“Apparently not,” Morgan scoffed.
“Come on,” Officer Vasquez said, tugging on her partner’s arm. “Leave the detective alone. We’ve got our own job to do.”
“What was that about,” Hilary asked, approaching as the two patrol officers walked away.
Zayne gave her an exaggerated eye roll. “He saw Rosewood and I coming in together this morning and decided to make it his business.”
“Why’d you arrive with Rosewood,” Trish asked. “Andy kick you out?”
“No,” Zayne laughed. “But he needed to make a stop somewhere before he came in this morning so the narco gave me a lift.”
“Ah, gotcha,” Trish said. “So, what did Captain Morgan say to piss you off?”
He rolled his eyes again. “Accused me of saying I didn’t like redheads.”
“Don’t you like anything female,” Trish asked. “And male, for that matter?”
“He’s much pickier about his men,” Hilary teased. She tugged on his arm and got them moving towards the stairs leading to homicide. “Which honestly is a relief. How can you not love Andy?”
“This is true,” Trish said, nodding. “He is pretty awesome. The narco on the other hand, well, he grows on you.”
“Like a fungus,” Hilary said, winking at Zayne. “But we have proof that you like at least one redhead, right?”
“Well,” he said, poking Trish in the arm, “two, actually. But who’s counting?”
“James is,” Hilary cackled. “He can’t stand the competition.”
