“Bosch,” a uniformed officer called across the room, “you got a visitor.”
Harry looked up from his desk and frowned. “Who the hell could be visiting?” He shook his head and followed the visitor out of the bullpen and towards the reception desk. “Ah, should have known it’d be you.”
“Disappointed?” Mickey raised an eyebrow at his brother.
“Do you have information for me?”
“I do,” Mickey responded.
“Then no, I’m not disappointed, Mick.” Grinning, Bosch clapped his half brother on the back and led him towards his desk where Jerry Edgar sat waiting. “You remember my partner?”
Mickey nodded and shook Jerry’s hand. “Can we talk somewhere private?”
“Of course,” Harry said, leading them to the first open interview room he saw. “This is our best bet.”
Waiting until everyone got settled, Harry took a seat and looked at his brother. “You get this handled?”
“I did,” Mickey said. “I spoke with Solina. She promised to deal with her incorrigible fledgling.”
“What about our dead body,” Edgar asked.
“That’s um, well, being handled, too,” Mickey hedged.
“Handled, how,” Harry asked. He’d leaned across the table without thinking. It was an innate intimidation tactic that he hadn’t meant to use on the lawyer, but hey, if it worked…
Making a face, Mickey leaned back in his chair. “Solina dispatched one of her right-hand minions to have a chat with the coroner.” He looked at the detectives and confessed all he’d been told. “They’re also going to remove the body before the body decides it’s time to remove itself.”
Jerry shuddered. “It’s going to – to uh, turn?”
“Most likely,” Mickey sighed. “They’ll have to put her down, but it’s better that we get involved before she wakes and causes even more trouble.”
“I don’t like this, Mickey,” Harry said as his brother nodded in understanding. “Be careful with the medical examiner, okay? I like this one.”
Mickey grinned. “Promise. And burn your murder book on this one. No one will even remember this happened other than the three of us.”
Harry stared at him.
“It’s the only way, Harry,” Mickey said.
Jerry Edgar shrugged. “I don’t know much about this shit, but I’m inclined to believe the vampire, Bosch.”
Shoulders slumping, Harry nodded. “Fine. This time. Next time,” he said, catching his brother’s eye, “we’ll handle this the right way. Keep the baby vamps under control.”
Mickey shrugged. “Not my babies to worry about,” he said. “But I’ll pass the message along.”
“Thank you,” Harry said, meaning it. Neither of them wanted their paranormal brethren dragged out into the sunlight, so to speak. “Now, get outta my face.”
Mickey flipped Harry off, then chuckled. “See you Sunday?”
“Like always,” Harry confirmed.
“He’s one odd duck,” Jerry said, watching Mickey leave. “Glad you’re my partner and not him.”
Harry grinned. If Jerry had any idea what he was really like, he might change his opinion on that. “Thanks, Edgar,” Harry said instead. Standing, he held out a hand. “Want to get dinner?”
“You know it,” Edgar replied. “Let’s go.”
As they left Hollywood Division, Harry watched the people milling around them, scenting the air, looking for trouble. He hated that Jerry knew his half brother was a vampire, but it was a small concession since Mickey was harmless. Mostly. But he would be damned if he would willingly drag his partner into another such case. The inhuman and the human needed to stay separate, even if they both bred monsters that preyed on the innocent.
