James picked up his hamburger and took a bite.  As he chewed, he listened to Zayne tell a story about his previous partner.  A man who, it seemed, had even less self-preservation instinct than Zayne himself.  The thought shocked James.

“So yeah,” Zayne drawled, all round vowels and long, drawn out words, “he wound up in the ER with fifteen stitches.”

He loved listening to Zayne talk, as long as he didn’t focus too much on the words he was saying.  That could piss him off and fast, depending on the day.  That sexy, southern drawl did him in every time.  And when he started speaking Spanish?  Ugh.  Too much.  Zayne could be talking about biting his toenails and James would be salivating.  It just didn’t matter.  There was something about his particular mix of a Texas drawl and Spanish undertones that just hit too well.

Andy shook his head, chuckling.  “I do not understand people sometimes,” he said, his own accent thick and heavy.  “He could have so easily avoided the entire situation.”

“I know,” Zayne said, slapping a hand on the table.

James took another bite of his burger as Andy launched into a story of his own.  His boyfriend had a much different accent than their mutual lover, but it was no less sexy.  Which had been a surprise to James in the beginning.  He knew that certain accents were considered sexy – Australian, French, Italian – but no one ever mentioned Eastern European countries for some reason.  Because he’d be damned if he wasn’t half in love with Andy five minutes after they’d first started talking.

Andy’s Romanian accent was more lyrical and exotic than Zayne’s.  His pronunciation of American words often defaulted to how they’d be said in his native tongue, occasionally rolling his r’s where no English or Spanish speaker might.  It fascinated James and he often found himself getting lost in the sounds and missing the words entirely.  It was embarrassing, but Andy had once admitted he’d done the same, first in Paris, later here in the US.

“What about you, narco,” Zayne asked, breaking him out of his reverie.

“Huh?”  He looked from Zayne to Andy and laughed.  “Sorry, I missed what you asked me.”

“He was daydreaming again,” Zayne teased, stealing a fry off James’ plate.

“Was not,” James muttered.

“Leave him be, Zayne,” Andy said.  “We were talking about crazy things our past partners have done.  Nothing important.”

“But it is amusing, gingerbread,” Zayne said.  “Pony up a story.”

Laughing, James gave Zayne a playful jab to the arm.  “Okay, fine, let me think of something that wasn’t Jake.  Can’t have him finding out I’m telling you embarrassing stories now, can I?”

They sat at the table for several more hours, telling stories about partners past and present, laughing at each other’s stories and antics.  As Zayne was telling yet another story, James’ mind wandered back to the sound of his voice.  Rich and sultry and realized that it sounded like home.  Andy’s brought to mind comfort and safety and that when the two of them began to talk over one another, words and sounds mingling and becoming one, he knew that it was the sound of his future.
