1_million_words. My lyric prompt was: "The world was on fire and no one could save me but you." - Chris Isaak - "Wicked Game" This pairing is from something I started writing four years ago and haven’t managed to finish yet. Maybe one day.
"The world was on fire and no one could save me but you."
She’d heard the song a million times over the years, but it hadn’t ever hit her like it did today. Ella cocked her head and stared at the ceiling from which the music emanated, wondering why it suddenly made sense… why it made her think of Devyn.
The cascade of dark, wavy hair, the piercing, grey eyes.
Pale flesh, cold skin, sharp teeth…
No. That part she tried not to think about lest it freak her out. Again. She knew his nature and had gained a level of acceptance of it. Just so long as she didn’t dwell on the fact for too long, she was fine. But she often wondered how you couldn’t linger on the fact that the man you’d give your body and soul to was a vampire.
Ella sighed and wiped the bar top, listening to the haunting sounds of Chris Isaak’s voice. The world hadn’t been on fire before she met him that much she knew for certain. But from the moment she’d first laid eyes on Devyn, everything had changed. For better or for worse remained to be seen. And yet, she couldn’t say that she cared how it ended, just as long as she got her chance to be with him. To say that she was in over her head was laughable. She was drowning with no shore in sight.
No one could save me but you…
He’d said those very words to her not so long ago. As if you really needed saving, she’d said in response. But he did need saving, just as much as she did. They each had their demons – with his being a literal one and hers more of a figurative sort – but when you laid it all out, it was all the same.
The world was on fire….
She hadn’t seen him in weeks. When they’d said goodbye that night, he’d tried to convince her that it’d be the last. Ella refused to believe he could leave her, although she knew all too well that he could – and would – do just that.
No one could save me but you…
And then the door opened and her heart stopped. She knew better than to hope, but her heart leaped at the thought that maybe, just maybe, he had changed his mind. Was there anything she had to offer to him – to a vampire – that would give him cause to return? Ella didn’t think there was, but she refused to admit it, even to herself. He had to return because she needed him. Because she…
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do…
A familiar shape stood silhouetted in the light and her heart kicked into gear once again. “You came,” she whispered, knowing he could hear her even from where he stood at the entrance. Knowing he could hear her kicked up pulse beating in her veins.
I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you…
His eyes fixed on hers, holding her frozen in her place. A ghost of his breath brushed against her skin, a faint memory of the stolen moments they’d had together. Shivers raced up her spine as his words breezed through her mind.
I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you…
She blinked, breaking the spell, and he was gone.
No, I wanna fall in love with you…
