Title: Idiot of the Year
Fandom: Romani Detective original fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/James Rosewood/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 716
Summary: Someone knows Reyes’ secret but he’s not sure who.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words.  Prompt was the song “You’ve Got a Nomination” by Sinplus.  Since I couldn’t find lyrics for the song, I went with the obvious interpretation. Now, I just need to stock up on gingerbread filling and get on to that next fic...

“What’s this?”  Zayne leaned over his desk and picked up the envelope he found sitting on it.  His name was scribbled across the front in a hand he found somewhat familiar.

Zeklos looked up and made a face.  “I don’t know, it was there when I got here this morning.  Open it and find out.”

Reyes gave him a foul look but slipped a finger under the seal and ripped it open.  Inside the envelope was a card, like a wedding invitation only not.  He pulled it out and turned it over in his hands.  “It says that I’ve been nominated.”

“Nominated?”  Zeklos’ dark brows drew together in a frown.  “For what?”

“Idiot of the year,” he read, voice quiet.

Zeklos burst into a fit of laughter, the display of mirth unusual out of the normally stoic detective.  “Who left that for you?”

“I’m not sure but that looks suspiciously like Trish’s handwriting, don’t you think?”  Zayne held the envelope up for Zek to study.

“I agree,” he said, taking the card and envelope from his partner.  “But did she say why you received such a prestigious nomination?”

“No,” Zayne said, near to growling, “but I have a feeling that it has something to do with you and that narco boyfriend of yours.”

“How are James and I responsible for you being idiot of the year,” Zeklos asked, head cocked to the side.

“I swear I didn’t nominate him,” James chuckled, coming up from behind Reyes.  “Although had I known someone was taking them…”

“James,” Andrej said, “be nice.”

“I thought I was,” the redhead grinned.  “So what are you two discussing?”

“He was given a nomination for idiot of the year.  We think it came from Rollins, but neither of us are positive.”

“Oh, you’re both dead on,” Trish said, rolling her desk chair over to their desks.  “It was me, I admit it.”

“But why?”  Zayne was glaring at her, eyes fierce.

“Because you are,” she said, as if that said it all.  “I mean, I can’t believe it took you so long to figure it out.”

“Figure what out,” Reyes said in stereo with Zeklos.

“Nice timing, you two,” Rosewood said.  Grabbing the chair usually occupied by Hilary Maxwell, he plopped down into it, waiting.

“Figure what out,” Zayne repeated, his voice holding more steady this time.

“That you’re in love with him,” she said, using an elbow to indicate Zeklos.

“How – wait, never mind.  I know how you know.”  He shook his head and glanced at Zeklos.  Andrej gave him a nod and a half smile of encouragement.  “I shouldn’t have ever told Hil.”

“Yes, you should have,” James said, leaning forward with his hands on his knees.  “She needed to know that you’d found what you’d been looking for all this time and that you are being well taken care of now.  What shouldn’t have happened was Hilary telling your secrets without your permission.”

“Oh please,” Trish laughed.  “You think that’s a secret?  There’s been a pool going on for years taking bets on when they were going to hook up.  No one thought it’d take six years.  Although the majority thought was that Zek was going to jump Reyes first, not the other way around.”  She rolled her chair back to her desk and left the room, whistling as she went.

“And you both thought I was crazy when I said there were rumors,” James said.  “I need to get back to work but Zayne?  Don’t let her get under your skin.”

“How can I not, knowing that she knows?”

“All you have to do is remember one thing,” James told him.

“And what’s that?”

“That you have exactly what you want,” Zeklos finished for James.

“Yeah, I guess I do,” Reyes agreed, winking at Rosewood.  “Now, get back to work before rumors start about all three of us.”

“Good point,” James agreed.  “Everyone already assumed the two of you were sleeping together, no need to drag me into it.”

“How do you put up with his attitude,” Zayne asked, watching Rosewood’s ass as he walked away.

“Same way I put up with yours,” Zeklos replied. “I ignore half of what you say.”

“That’s just rude,” Reyes pouted.

“But effective,” Andrej teased. “Now do we have a case or what?”

Thanks! Oh, you now that a secret like that won't stay secret for long! Especially when you have two very nosy female detectives on hand. :D
