Title: Bedside Resolutions
Fandom: Romani Detective original fiction
Pairing: Andrej/James/Zayne
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 1,248
Summary: One more thing Zeklos doesn’t understand about America is New Year’s resolutions.  James and Zayne attempt to explain them to him.
Author’s Notes: Written as a secondary fill for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words.  My prompt was: I won’t take the closest parking space possible to the gym, especially if it means I have to park in the fire lane.  Sharpie thought it screamed Reyes and I can’t deny she’s right.

“What is this obsession with New Year’s Resolutions,” Zeklos asked from the left side of the bed.  He was only partly disappointed he’d been evicted from his usual spot in the middle, but there was time enough to resolve that bit of information later.  “I don’t understand why you Americans wait until the first of the year to make changes.  Isn’t it more prudent and effective to start right now?”

“It’s not just Americans,” James said resting his head on Zeklos’ shoulder.  “What are you reading?”

“Better question is why the hell is he reading in bed,” Zayne asked from the far side of the mattress.  “Doesn’t he know that kind of thing is for the living room or a doctor’s office?”

“Ignore him,” James said, smiling.

“Hilary’s most recent blog post,” Andrej said, holding up his tablet and waving it for emphasis.  “She’s made a most interesting list of resolutions that she very easily could have begun the moment she kicked Zayne out of their relationship.”

“Hey,” Reyes said, a hint of hurt in his voice. “That’s not fair.”

“Actually, it is, cowboy,” James said.  He pointed at the screen of Zek’s tablet and read aloud.  “Eat better.  Exercise more.  Spend time with Trish.  Find a boyfriend who isn’t obsessed with his partner.  She could have started any of those at any time last year.”

“Yeah, she probably could have,” Zayne began, stopping suddenly.  “Wait, she did not write that last one.  You made that up, didn’t you?”

Laughing, the redhead sat up and leaned over to kiss Reyes’ cheek.  “Maybe, maybe not.  You’ll never know, will you?”

“You are such an ass,” Zayne grumbled, pushing the redhead off his shoulder.  “You act like you’ve never made a resolution in your life.”

“I haven’t,” Zeklos said, meaning it.  Resolutions weren’t at the top of their list of priorities back home.  Surviving generally took precedent.

“I’ll admit it, I have in the past,” James offered.  “But I gave it up once I realized my job and lifestyle kept me from keeping any of them.  That’s when I decided to take it day by day and do the best I can.”

“That sounds reasonable.  Better than setting yourself up for failure.  Zayne?   You made any resolutions so far this year?”

Reyes frowned and shook his head.  “Not really.  Just little things like the sarky narky here said.  Get more rest.  Be nicer to this jackass.  Not taking the closest parking space possible to the gym, especially if it means I have to park in the fire lane.  That kind of thing.”

Rolling his eyes, James settled his head back on Zeklos’ shoulder.  Andrej looped an arm around the ginger and pulled him close.  “Like you ever go to the gym, cowboy.  Although I can absolutely see you parking in a fire lane.”

“Dude,” Zayne said, sitting up in bed and allowing the covers to fall to his hips.  “Of course I go to the gym.  How do you think I got this six pack?”  He slapped his impressive abs and looked at his lovers.

“He has a point,” Zeklos said, a hint of a grin touching his face.  “They are nice abdominals.”

“Eh, I’ve seen better,” James teased, tickling Andrej’s belly with his fingers.

Squirming, Zeklos laughed.  “You are right however.  He does have a habit of parking my car in red zones.  Says he’s a cop and he’s allowed.”

“It was an emergency,” Zayne defended.  “And I got the judge to dismiss your ticket, too.”

“Oh god,” James laughed, grabbing hold of Reyes and pulling him down into the pile he’d made with Zeklos.  “There is so much I don’t know about you two.  I’ve missed so much.”

“Resolve to learn more,” Reyes joked, curling into the curve of Rosewood’s naked body.

“I can do that,” James agreed, running a hand through the Texan’s thick waves.

“That other one needs to make a resolution now, too,” Zayne said, words muffled by James’ body.

“I resolve not to smack you every time you open your mouth to insult or harass me,” Zeklos said, the smile giving away the truth behind his words.

“Ha ha, very funny,” Zayne mocked.  “Be serious.”

“Only if you can be,” Andrej insisted.  “Give me one serious resolution and I will give you one, too.”

“Hmm,” Reyes murmured, thinking.  “I resolve to try to take things more seriously.  My job, this,” he waved a hand indicating the bedroom they were sharing.  “Everything.  This doesn’t mean I’m always going to succeed, but I’m going to try.”

“You shouldn’t always take everything seriously either,” James said.  “Sometimes you need to be ridiculous just so you don’t lose your mind.”

“I agree,” Zeklos said, beginning to mull over something he could give both men.  “Your offbeat and unpredictable side is why we work so well together, why the three of us are working as well as we are.”

“And what do you have to offer us this year,” Reyes said, a lusty smirk on his face.  “Any naughty resolutions you’d like to offer up?”

Andrej laughed.  “No, I think we’ve already managed to resolve everything on my sexual to-do list but…”

“But?”  James’ coppery eyebrows lifted in question.

“But, maybe I can resolve to let you both into my life a little more.”  He’d allowed them into his professional life because he hadn’t had much choice in that matter.  However, even once he and James had started dating, he never really opened up to him.  Even more than that, he’d always kept his past from Reyes as well and that was the thing he endeavored to change.  “James wants to get to know us better – both as a team and as individuals. I thought maybe you both like to know more about me.”

“I know a lot about you, baby,” Zayne said.

“But not my past, my family.”

“That’s very true,” Reyes agreed.  “You sure about this?”

Zeklos shrugged. “It’s been nearly sixteen years since I left it all behind me.  I wait much longer and there won’t be anyone to tell.”

“Sounds like a plan,” James said, tracing a line up from Zek’s belly button.  “But we’re not going anywhere so don’t feel like you have to spill it all in one night.”

“What he said,” Reyes agreed, reaching over and taking Zeklos’ tablet out of his hand.  “And no more reading in bed, man.  There are better, more important things to be done here.”

“Like?”  Zeklos widened his eyes a touch, waiting to see what Reyes would come up with.

“Like seeing which one of us can make you beg for mercy first,” Zayne suggested.

“I like that idea,” James agreed.

“I knew you would,” Reyes grinned.

Suddenly, Zeklos understood the merits of being on the outside edge of the bed.  As much as he loved to be cuddled from both sides, he did have an easy escape route at the moment.  Not that he’d ever consider trying to escape for longer than a second or two.  But it was always nice to know it was there if he needed it.  “You are both on,” he said.  “My money’s on James.”

“Oh it is, is it?”  Reyes rose to his knees and lunged over the redhead, tickling his partner.  “Give up yet?”

James squirmed out from under Reyes’ body and slapped his nearly perfect ass.  “This is not what I had in mind, cowboy!”  But Andrej and Zayne were laughing too loudly to hear his protests.

Thanks! And yes, they really are. I'm hoping that means they're settling in and becoming comfortable with each other. Hah.

Definitely suited Zayne, that resolution! And I love the playfulness of this too, like Sharpie said! (okay, she said silly, but it amounts to the same thing!)

Nicely done! ;-)

Thank you so much! Hahaha... I think playful leads to silly nine times out of ten (and with these three, probably more than that!).
