Author’s Notes: Written for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words.  My prompt was: “I’m a siren and you’re a pirate but I decide not to kill u because you’re actually really really REALLY cute oh shit” au. I figured why not – let’s make Ethan and Travis pirates and sirens and see what happens.

After an eternity, he was returning.  Travis could see the ship in the distance, just the outline of a sail and hull against the clouds and waves.  It had been too long, many sunrises since he’d last seen the green-eyed pirate, but soon, they’d come face to face once again.

Finding his favorite spot on the rocky cliff, Travis settled in to wait.  His long, dark hair floated on the gentle sea breeze, cooling and chilling his skin at the same time.  It was odd, but he felt an anxious stirring in his belly as the ship approached out of the mist.  There was something different about this human, something he couldn’t put his finger on.

For example, why had he let the pirate and his crew through the pass safely?  He was a siren and it was his job to lure these pretty, pretty men to his death.  The first time, he’d started his song, opening his mouth and letting the words flow out and then, when his gaze crossed that of the beautiful man at the wheel of the ship, his voice faltered and evaporated into the crisp sea air.

Frustrated, he brushed a wavy lock out of his eyes.  The ship was closer now, within hearing distance if he began to sing… and yet, he didn’t.  He couldn’t.  For the first time in his eternal life, he couldn’t do his job.  This confused Travis more than anything ever had before because luring sailors – pirates or otherwise  - to their deaths was his nature, what he was created for.  So, why wasn’t he able to do his job?

He could see the ship come to a halt, apparently having dropped anchor mere feet from the edges of the rocky cliff Travis perched on.  A figure moved on the deck, coming close to the edge and looking in Travis’ direction.  Before he could get a word – or note – out, the figure jumped overboard, landing in the restless water with a splash.  Travis leapt to his feet, rushing to the edge of the cliff, tempted to jump in and do the unthinkable: save the pirate.  But no, there was his ruddy hair and pale face, floating just above the surface.

The head bobbed closer as the pirate set to swimming.  Travis hustled to the base of the cliff, readying to meet the green-eyed man who’d taken over his thoughts.  He was a strong swimmer, this pirate, not deterred in the least by the choppy waves crashing against him.  When he reached the rocky shore, he pulled himself onto a ledge and sat, staring up at Travis.

“Who are you,” he asked, confused because never had a live body landed on his shores.  He’d always made sure that they were deader than dead if they got that close.

“I’m known as Captain Calico Vane,” he grinned, green eyes bright with excitement.  “But it’s a ridiculous name, so you may call me Ethan, siren.”

Travis dragged his eyes along the pirate’s sopping wet body, taking note of every muscular curve and bulge.  “Ethan,” he said, rolling the name around on his tongue.  “Welcome to my rock.  My name is Travis.”

“That’s an odd name for a siren,” the pirate laughed, “but it suits you.”

“So I’ve been told,” he said.  “Have a seat and tell me what brings you here.”

“You do,” the pirate said.  “So many have come this way only never to return.  Tales of rough waters and monsters in the sea abound.”

“I’m no monster,” Travis scoffed, knowing that he wasn’t exactly a puppy either.

“No, but you do lure men to their deaths with your beautiful song,” he said.  “I heard you, that first day, but not once since.  Why?”

He turned his face to the sea, pondering the pirate’s question.  Sighing, he directed his gaze back towards the gorgeous, green-eyed man sitting beside him.  “It’s true, I’m a siren, and you’re a pirate.  Under normal circumstances, this would make us enemies.  Mortal enemies.  But…”

“But?”  Ethan lifted an eyebrow in question.

“But that first day, I decided not to kill you,” he sighed, scrubbing the palm of his hand across his chin.  “Because when you got close enough for me to pull your ship onto the rocks, I saw you and I realized you’re the most stunning human I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t let you die.  Beauty such as yours deserves to survive the ages.”

A small smile curved the plump lips of Ethan’s mouth.  “I appreciate that, siren,” he said, reaching out and touching a hand to Travis’ wind tousled hair.  “You’re not so bad yourself.”

“So, you’ll come back and see me, next time you sail this way?”  He hated the note of hope in his voice.

“For as long as you can promise the safety of myself and my crew,” Ethan agreed.

“Don’t ever anger me and you’ll be forever safe to pass through my waters.”

“Then it’s a deal, siren,” the pirate said, leaning forward and sealing the deal with a kiss.

Travis watched as he dove from a high cliff back into the waters and swam towards his ship.  He didn’t know when – or even if – he’d see his pirate ever again, but he had faith.

Thank you! I wasn't even sure if this would work, but I went for it anyway.
