Title: Two Points on a Line
Fandom: Romani Detective original fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/James Rosewood/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 749
Summary: Andrej reflects on what makes their trio work.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words.  I used two quotes: “It's so easy to hear everything you say,” and “His manner was impulsive rather than arrogant.”  I altered the first one a tiny bit, but not by much.

The key to having two lovers, Andrej thought, was diversity.  One had to sit firmly at the left side of the personality spectrum while the other idled somewhere on the right.  Although they needed to be different in order for things to work properly, they couldn’t be too different or there’d be no end to the arguments.

Ditto for two boyfriends who were too much alike.

At times, he worried that James and Zayne were indeed too similar. They were opinionated, educated, and occasionally obnoxious.  However, there was one defining difference between the two of them that was probably what kept the redhead from smothering the cowboy in his sleep.

Despite the fact that Reyes came off like an egotistical asshole, his manner was impulsive rather than arrogant.  The confidence he held in himself was what made him seem overbearing and self-righteous when, in truth, he was simply certain that whatever he did would work out.  Thus, his impulsive nature.  Zayne never once believed that his plans wouldn’t work out exactly as he expected them too because, nine times out of ten, he was absolutely correct. Did that make him arrogant?  No, but it sure as hell made him annoying.

James, on the other hand, was cautious, calculated, and less likely to jump feet first into anything.  Well, his present relationship excluded because that was the rashest thing he’d done in his entire life.  Or so he said, the truth of that remained to be seen.  This often led to him being disliked on the basis that he was holding everyone back, trying to save the glory for himself, when in actuality, he was simply trying to keep everyone involved alive.  Not that that made him any less unpopular because it never worked that way.

On paper, you wouldn’t think that two men who were so very different could ever get along, but Jay and Zayne had surprised him.  Somehow, their disparate parts fit together in a way that made them a working whole instead of two parts working against one another.  Reyes was good at formulating a plan while Rosewood took the time to iron out all the important points.  They made for a good team.

Sipping his after dinner cup of coffee, Andrej smiled as he overheard his two men fighting in the kitchen.  It sounded like sports talk, but not having the slightest idea about American sports, he couldn’t be certain.  Zayne, having played high school football, believed he knew the ins and outs of every sport ever played while James, being the analytical one, thought he could use statistics to prove Zayne incorrect.

They were both wrong.  All their arguing did was bring them closer together.  They wouldn’t believe Andrej if he told them, but the truth was that by disagreeing on something as innocuous as sports, they were learning each other’s boundaries as well as their likes and dislikes.  That, in spite of the decibel level in the kitchen, was a beautiful thing.

“But you’re not listening to me, narco,” Zayne chided.

“I am listening to you, cowboy,” James retorted. “The problem is, you aren’t saying anything worth listening to right now.”

Andrej shook his head.  It was so easy to listen to everything either one of them said as far as he was concerned.  The sound of their voices alone, even when raised in an attempt to be heard over the other, was music to his ears.  He prayed it would never end.

“That’s it,” he heard Zayne spit out.  “Zek?  Can you come in here for a minute?  I need you to tell the narco that he’s wrong.”

“And while you’re in here, Andy,” James interrupted, “maybe you can tell the cowboy that it’s not me whose wrong, but him.”

Placing his coffee mug back on the table, he sighed, preparing to go into the kitchen and act as a go between for his boyfriends.  It was only for show, sometimes he believed that if they were left on their own for too long, they started an argument so that they had a reason to draw him into their conversation.  This didn’t always work but more often than not, it did.

Like tonight.

“Andy,” James called.

“I am coming, you two,” Andrej sighed.  Pushing to his feet, he felt a smile creep back onto his face.  “I will be right there, do not strangle one another until I get there!”

Not that he was worried, but it never hurt to be safe.

Now I am all for a glimpse of healthy poly relationships. And a glimpse really conveys how the trio functions, as well as hinting at their personalities. I like how everything that happens ties into the opening observation on how diverse lovers can make for a unique dynamic. It's a short piece, but it conveys exactly what you'd want to: likeable characters sharing a likeable bond.

I also enjoyed the hint that Zayne and James' squabble might only be a front to draw their shared lover into it. Cute :)

Yay! I'm glad that you enjoyed. :D

They are three very unique and odd characters and sometimes even I'm surprised they can make it work. That's mostly Andy though - he's the peacemaker between his two rebels. :D It makes me happy to know you find them likable, but even happier that you find their relationship to be a healthy one (James and Zayne tend to fight a lot, but that's to be expected when you have two very alpha males in one relationship, I suppose).

Hah - Andy used to fight their disagreements, but he's learned that there can be benefits if he simply stays out. :D

Thanks for reading. :)
