Day 23: A letter to someone. Anyone.
While this is a letter from Andrej to Zayne, in so many ways, it’s also a letter from me to my husband.
Zayne,
This morning I picked your socks up off the floor and put them in the laundry. Later, I washed the dishes you left in the sink after your midnight snack. In a few minutes, I’m going to finish my coffee and pack your lunch so you will not starve between breakfast and your actual lunch break. Then, once I’m finished, I’ll wake you up for the first time because you always need a second nudge this early in the morning.
Later, once you’re sitting on the couch, drinking your beer, I’ll prepare your dinner and clean up after. Some nights you help me, other nights you’re too invested in whatever has caught your attention to think to ask if I need help. Maybe I’ll make you dessert, maybe we’ll sit on the couch and cuddle, and maybe it’ll become something more. Perhaps, I’ll sit in my chair and read a magazine or a book while you watch football. Possibly it might be a combination of all these or none.
I’ve been told that you take advantage of my kindness, of my love for you. People have also said that you are like my child – I feed you, care for you, and send you on your way, all without a word of thanks. But these interlopers in our lives do not know you, do not understand our relationship. Those that discount you and our partnership do not see all you do for me. How you calm me with a look, put me back together with a hug. They’ll never understand how your mere presence encouraged me to be a better person.
They’ll never know how your love makes me whole.
xx,
Andrej
