Title: Sunday Morning Musings
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/James Rosewood/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Andrej’s trying to read while his boys sleep and yet, his mind won’t allow him to focus.
Author’s Note: Written for Say What on 1_million_words. The quote for Friday, September 29, 2017 was: "Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." Mark Twain. I couldn’t agree with him more. Side note: I need to stop requesting review books and finishing the ones I start on my own.
Word Count: 598
Andrej adjusted his position, moving the pillow so that his head didn’t bang into the hard, wooden headboard behind him. Zayne slept with one arm across Andrej’s body, face pressed into his side. James was on his side, one hand tucked under his head, the other resting lightly on Zayne’s fingertips. It was about as close as either man got to acknowledging how much the other meant to them, but Andrej took what he could get in these times.
Lifting his book, Andrej tried to focus on the words before him, but found his mind wandering. Early Sunday mornings were the only time he had to himself where he wasn’t thinking about work, or Zayne, or Jay, or anything but himself. It was the only time he allowed himself to be selfish and put his needs and wants first. And yet, he couldn’t concentrate on anything but the two warm bodies lying on either side of him.
He ruffled Zayne’s out of control mop of hair before picking his book up again. Contrary to what his boys thought, Andrej did read more than trashy romances. Truth was, he was fond of most genres, especially westerns and epic fantasy novels. The book he currently held was of the latter variety, chock full of magic, excitement, and god only knew what else. A true escape from the real world if there ever was one.
And if maybe there was a bit of a love story there, too, he’d not be upset. However, no one needed to know about that.
James shifted in his sleep, sliding onto his chest. Instinctively, Zayne reached for the redhead in his sleep. Zayne’s hand settled on James’ shoulder and both resumed their tranquil slumber. Smiling at the sight, Andrej was content to know that they cared for one another, whether they would admit to it or not. Before long, they’d both be awake and getting on each other’s – and his own – nerves but, for now, they were at peace.
Realizing he wasn’t going to get any reading done, Andrej reached over Zayne and placed his book on the nightstand. Trying his hardest not to wake either, he wiggled until he was back on their level, snuggled into his favorite place between them. Zayne murmured something in a mix of Spanish and English before pulling Andrej into his warmth. James, feeling the loss of contact, snuggled against him until their bodies were glued together.
Sighing, Andrej reminded himself that the tale Kvothe was spinning would still be there later, that the tragedy that changed his life would wait to unfold. That he had another redhead waiting for him as well as an annoying, if lovable partner. What he needed to focus on was the here and now, even if those in his present were snoring softly.
“Go back to sleep, baby,” Zayne murmured. “You think too much.”
For once, Zayne had a valid point. Smiling, Andrej kissed his sleepy face. There’d be time later for his book, for his multitude of thoughts, but this was something he needed to enjoy while it was here. Who knew where any of them would be next Sunday, after all?
Giving James a kiss to the head as well, Andrej closed his eyes and let sleep take him. They’d wake him when they were ready for breakfast or, most likely, for their pre-breakfast romp. He couldn’t fault them because it was his second favorite part of their Sunday mornings together, falling right after his quiet reading time.
There was a reason why he read all those smutty novels, after all.
