Summary: Sometimes all you want is five more minutes.
Author’s Note: Written for the Say What challenge at 1_million_words. The prompt was, "The amount of sleep required by the average person is five minutes longer." - Wilson Misner. Now that I’ve titled this, I have Lorrie Morgan’s song, “Five Minutes” running through my head. Mostly the part of the chorus where she says, “You’ve got five minutes to figure it out”. Hah.
“Zayne.”
“Mmmph,” Zayne muttered, burying his face into the pillow.
A strong hand shook his shoulder. “Zayne,” the voice said sharper this time.
“Go away,” he muttered, pulling the covers up over his head.
“We should get a dog,” one voice said.
“I could call Trish. She would loan us hers,” a second voice said.
“Nah,” the first voice said. “Her dog’s not big enough to wake his ass up.”
“You may be right.”
“C’mon, asshole,” the first voice growled. “Get the hell up, we’ve got things to do!”
“No,” Zayne moaned. “Not yet. Just five more minutes…”
“God I hate him,” that first voice declared.
“Give him time,” the second soothed. “He will awaken and we can go.”
The voices quieted down and Zayne began to drift off to sleep. God, why couldn’t they leave him alone?
“I think it’s time.”
“No, Jay.”
“Aw, come on, Andy. It’s been thirty minutes. It’s past time.”
“Jay, do not.”
“Sorry, baby, but he can’t sleep all day.”
Zayne snuggled down into the warm comforter and ignored the conversation as best he could. He closed his eyes and they immediately flew open again. Spluttering, he fought his way out from under covers that were suddenly wet. And cold.
“God damnit,” Zayne spat. “What the hell just happened?”
“James,” Andrej snapped. “Did I not say no?”
Shrugging, James used the now empty bucket to gesture towards Zayne. “Yeah, but he’s up now, isn’t he?
Yanking the bucket out of James’ hands, Andrej smacked the redhead with the plastic receptacle. “Yes, he is awake but my bed – our bed – is now sopping wet. I am not changing the linens, James!”
With a backward glance at his two boyfriends, Andrej stormed out of the bedroom, the plastic bucket smacking into the walls as he made his way out into the garage.
Andrej stood in the garage, his car on the left, Zayne’s old truck on the right, and took several slow, deep breaths. The warmth of the early morning was seeping into his bones, relaxing his muscles, calming his mind. People really underestimated the healing power of the desert heat.
“The narco says you can come back inside now,” Zayne called from the doorway.
Zayne’s hair was damp and sticking up all over. If he looked too long, Andrej would melt and that was not a good thing. “Has he stripped my bed?”
“He has,” Zayne said. “He’s currently trying to figure out how to get all the sheets, blanket, and comforter in the washer.”
“They will not all fit,” Andrej sighed.
“I tried to tell him that,” Zayne said. “But as usual, he wouldn’t listen.”
Andrej stopped in front of Zayne waiting for the Texan to move. “He refuses to listen to anything you say and I do not understand why.”
“It’s because he’s an asshole,” Zayne said, stepping to the side so Andrej could enter the house again. “You smell like dust and sunshine.”
It caught him off guard, but made him smile all the same. “And you smell like whatever had been in that bucket,” Andrej pointed out. “You need a shower.”
“On it,” Zayne said, giving a mock salute.
“For the record,” Andrej called at Zayne’s back, “next time we plan a trip, I am setting your clock ahead fifteen minutes.”
Grinning, Zayne shrugged. “Better make it twenty, just to be safe.”

You know it's true. I'd shoot anyone who threw a bucket of anything onto my bed.
YAY ME! And I started another last night but didn't get it finished. Kids are almost out of school and have no homework and my 16-year-old was rather chatty last night. But she was also making cookies so I didn't discourage her. :)
