Title: It Takes Two
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Hilary Maxwell + Trish Rollins
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 730
Summary: Trish and Hilary have cornered their suspect when he decided he’s not quite ready to go to jail.
Author’s Note: Written for the Rare Pairs challenge at 1_million_words. Trish and Hil are a rare-ish pair for me since I almost never write them together without any of the boys around. So, since it’s just the two of them here, I’m calling it a rare pairing. This was also written for the weekend challenge where my prompt was, “I’ve fought imaginary elves that were stronger than you!"
“Look,” Trish said, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at the guy. She and Hilary had pegged him for the string of robberies plaguing local check cashing centers but hadn’t had any hard evidence until now. “We know you’re good for this and we have proof. So, if you cooperate we’ll see if we can work you a deal.”
Hilary glanced at Trish, giving her a ‘what the hell was that all about’ look. They both knew they couldn’t do a damn thing in a situation like this. Trish shrugged one shoulder, unconcerned.
“Right,” Hilary agreed. “We can talk to the prosecution or… something… and tell them you were a good little boy and came along quietly.”
“Ain’t happenin’,” the guy said before pushing his way between the two women and taking off.
“Why do they always run,” Hilary sighed.
“I wish I knew,” Trish said, taking off after their suspect.
“Stop,” Hilary shouted, taking up behind her partner.
“You’ll never catch me,” he shouted back. “And if you do, you’ll regret it.”
“I’m not worried,” Trish said, pushing herself to run faster. He was only a couple feet away now and she had the advantage of having longer legs. “I’ve fought imaginary elves that were stronger than you!"
“You really need to stop playing those MMORPGs with Reyes,” Hilary laughed. “It’s not healthy.”
Trish grinned. “Yeah, but look what I learned to do, Maxwell.” She was within inches of the suspect now. Digging in the toes of her left foot, she launched herself onto his back. One arm snaked around his shoulders, trapping at least one arm in the process. The redhead’s momentum pushed the suspect forward and off balance, causing him to stumble and fall.
“Oof,” he grunted as they landed, Trish on top of him. “You’re heavy, get the hell off of me.”
“Not yet,” Trish said, rising up and putting her knee in the small of his back. She might be bigger than he was, but he was still a man and that meant there was the possibility he was stronger than she was. Although it was obvious he wasn’t half as smart.
“Here,” Hilary said, holding out her cuffs. “Secure him.”
“Gladly,” Trish grinned, grabbing the suspect’s free arm and bringing it behind him. Once she’d locked his other wrist into the metal bracelet, she allowed Hilary to help her up and off their collar.
“Seriously though, Rollins,” Hilary said, shaking her head. “You have got to stop playing those games with Zayne.”
Trish tossed her hair back, giving it a quick finger comb. “What makes you think that has anything to do with that idiot?”
“Because,” Hilary laughed. “That’s his favorite takedown. Ask Andy if you don’t believe me.”
Trish shrugged. “Maybe I will.” She looked down at the guy on the ground and let out a harsh breath. “Help me get this loser up so we can get on with our lives?”
“Yup,” Hilary said, taking their suspect’s right arm into her hand. Together, they lifted him onto his knees and helped him to stand. “Unis are on their way,” Hil added once he was seated on the bumper of Trish’ car.
“Perfect. Wanna get some food once they get him the hell out of here?”
Hilary snorted. “Again. Stop spending so much time with Reyes. In person or online. He’s starting to rub off on you and not in a good way.”
Laughing, Trish gave Hilary a gentle push. “Tell me you’re not hungry and I’ll cancel my online date with the cowboy tonight.”
Hilary blinked.
“Ah-hah,” Trish shouted. “I knew it. You just love busting my chops about your crazy ass ex, don’t you?”
Hilary shrugged. “Maybe,” she said. “But maybe I just get a kick out of harassing you?”
“Feeling’s mutual, honey,” she joked. “Ooh, patrol car is here. Food is imminent!”
Hilary laughed and gave her partner a playful punch. “I swear, I got rid of Reyes because he was such a damn child. Please do not think you have to take up that spot in my life.”
“Never,” Trish assured her. “I like having fun but I know how to be serious, too. But if we don’t eat soon, I’m going to turn into a big ass baby.”
“Then by all means, let’s feed you before disaster strikes.”
“Amen, sister,” Trish said, unlocking the car. “Amen.”
