Dude, it’s April. APRIL. And double dude, but today my only niece turns 22. Wow.

What I Read:

Foul Play on Words by Becky Clark - Netgalley ARC, publishes 4/8/19

Not bad, although not the best cozy I’ve ever read either. Charlee is a bit hapless at best, but the story was fun.

The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton - Netgalley ARC, published 3/26/19

Holy fuck, this narrator is batshit. That’s about all I can say. She starts out sounding like a reasonable woman who can’t let go of the man she loves. That ends quickly, to say the least. If you don’t mind a bit of unlikely, outrageous scenarios, this is a good book. I actually had a hard time putting this one down.

The Perfect Girl by Gilly Macmillan - Audbile Audio, available now

I picked this up on a whim when Audible was doing one of their BOGO sales. After looking at the reviews, I got worried – didn’t seem like a lot of people enjoyed this. While I was willing to write it off as a loss (I mean, in a way, it was free), I ended up really enjoying it. I’m not the best mystery solver so, to say that I didn’t figure out who killed Maria wasn’t a surprise, but what happened kind of did. The female narrator is miles better than the male, although the guy has a nice voice.

One Small Sacrifice by Hilary Davidson - Print ARC from the publisher, publishes 06/01/19

I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers and, despite that, I rarely ever figure out who done it by the end. However, this is one of the better crafted mysteries I’ve read in a long time. I had no idea who was guilty and was half certain they were ALL guilty. I’m excited that this seems to be the start of a series as well. Mostly because I love Sheryn’s partner, Rafael. Also, this was another I had a hard time putting down because I HAD TO KNOW OKAY?

Hot Texas Sunrise by Delores Fossen - Netgalley ARC, published 3/26

This was my second Delores Fossen book, the first having been Lawman with a Cause. This wasn’t much like the other, but still an excellent read. It touched on some tough subjects of foster care and child abuse, but not so much as to bring you down. Definitely a feel-good love story in the end. I’ve come to love her and B. J. Daniels both lately.

What I’m Currently Reading/Trying to Read:

The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald (Paperback)

Unbroken Cowboy by Maisey Yates (Netgalley ARC)

Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi (library e-loan)

By the way, if anyone is ever interested in the print books I’m reading, let me know. I’d be happy to pop them in the mail. You have no idea how many paper books I have sitting around because I haven’t made it to the library to make a donation yet. It’s also possible to gift copies of audiobooks I’ve acquired via Audible.

What I’ve Been Watching

Heroes: Reborn. I loved the original series (even the whackadoodle last season) and since I love Zachary Levi, I had to watch this as well. It was in no way as good as the original series, but not awful either.

Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World. God, I loved the original series so much. My older girl and I would sit and watch the DVDs to the point where she knew the theme song in Japanese (she was about 2 at the time). This sequel does the original justice, although it’s more violent than I remember the original being. Plus, the animation is GORGEOUS.

Mental. I initially hunted this series down because I adore Warren Kole and will watch anything he’s in. However, I am loving this show! It’s about a group of doctors working in a psych unit in a major hospital. The new director of the unit – Jack Gallagher – is a bit unorthodox, but gets things done. Sort of like House without all the damn attitude.

What’s Up Next

Not really sure. I got the first disc of Looking in the mail from Netflix, so that’s obviously next. My husband told me I need to watch Dumplin as well (which was already on my list, it looks cute). I’m trying to dig through our DVDs and see what Marvel movies we own, what I can find on Netflix, and what I need to try and scrounge as cheaply as possible. I’ve been wanting to watch them all in order for some time now so… wish me luck? On the bright side, I know we have the first two Iron Man movies because I’ve watched them one too many times on my own. Haha.

Oh, and because I was joking with sharpiesgal about going on a binge at PaperBackSwap, I thought I ought to post a pic of the books I’ve requested over the last month. I guess on the bright side, it only costs me $0.49 per transaction and I try to get as many books from one person as I can. Oh, and I maybe still have one more on the way (Cowboy Wolf Trouble by Kait Ballenger). Yeah, please get me away from the free books?
