“Goodbye, Dean,” Castiel said, giving his friend one last, long look. “Be safe.”
“I think we’re well past that point,” Dean said with a disgusted laugh.
“Dean,” Sam said, reminding his brother not to frighten the angel. “I think Cas knows what we’re up against.”
“I do,” Castiel agreed, his blue eyes searching the dirt surrounding his feet. “You’re both going then?”
Sam nodded. “Yeah, we need to get going, too. Dean?”
“Yeah, give me a minute, okay?” He gave his brother a look and Sam nodded.
Even though Sam knew Dean would never be able to tell Castiel all the things he needed to say, he gave his brother the privacy he requested and walked towards the waiting Impala.
“Dean, are you okay,” Castiel asked, eyes searching his friend’s handsome face for some sort of clue.
“No,” Dean said, rubbing a hand across his face. “You know that we’re probably riding off to our death, right?”
Castiel looked away. He knew it was more than ‘probably’ but he couldn’t say the words. Even if it hadn’t been forbidden, he’d never be able to ask Dean to stay, to let the world suffer just once, so that he could be safe, here, with him. Dean wouldn’t agree to something like that anyway, so asking was pointless.
Dean took a step forward. “Cas?”
“I know, Dean,” he said, sighing.
“But?”
“But asking you to do anything un-Winchester-like is out of the question,” he said, speaking his thoughts without meaning to do so.
He reached for the angel, hands stopping inches from the collar of the trench coat Castiel always wore. Letting his hands fall away, Dean shrugged. “I’ll see you later,” he said, his body and his eyes sending mixed messages to an already confused angel.
“I’ll wait here,” Castiel said. “Until you return.”
“Cas, you don’t have to do that,” Dean said. “What if –”
“Dean,” Sam yelled. “We have to go.”
“Coming,” he shouted back at his brother. “Cas –”
“Dean, go,” he said, holding up a hand to stop any further argument. “No matter how this turns out, I’ll be waiting for you.”
His words hung heavy in the air. Dean knew that Castiel would always be on their side, have their back when he was able. But was there more to his choice of words or was he simply being Cas? He didn’t have time to find out. All he could do was pray he survived this case so he could return here, to Cas, and find out.
“Take care of yourself, Cas,” Dean said and walked away.
Castiel smiled. “I love you, too, Dean.”
