Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2,486
Summary: Andrej returns to the MGM to re-question some of his top suspects, bringing Trish and Hilary along with him.
Author’s Note: I still haven’t finished the last chapter, although I have at least started it.

“Did you get any sleep last night,” Trish asked when she saw a bleary-eyed Andrej come into the bullpen.

“I got some sleep,” he said, stifling a yawn behind his fist. “But it was very fitful and not restful at all.” He set his messenger bag on his desk and sighed. “I will be okay as soon as I can start making some headway on this case.”

“Maybe we can help,” Hilary said, handing him a file. “We did a little digging on the major suspects this morning.”

He opened the file folder and flipped through the pages. “Did you find anything interesting?”

“Yes and no,” Trish said.

Andrej hung his bag off the back of his chair and sat down. “What did you find?”

“First, the non-issue: Austen Ricci.”

“Adrien,” Andrej said. “He prefers Adrien.”

“So, he told you his real name,” Trish said, nodding approvingly. “That’s a good thing. Shows he trusts you some. But anyway, he hails from a tiny ass town in Tennessee called Tucker. Mom is alive and his dad is… unknown as far as I can tell. Two uncles, one is a lawyer, the other is a doctor. Both live in Nashville. No record aside for a ticket for operating a vehicle incapable of maintaining thirty-five miles an hour on a major roadway.”

“What was he driving,” Andrej asked. “I do not know what would not be able to reach that speed.”

“You’ll appreciate this,” Trish said, looking him in the eye and grinning. “A horse. An elderly horse from the police report.”

That made Andrej chuckle. “The police force in Tucker must be looking for things to do,” he said. “Anything else?”

“Rumor has it that he’s also dating one of the local detectives.” Trish checked her notes. “An Elliot Deacon. But that’s just rumor, I couldn’t find anything to verify it.”

Nodding, Andrej thought about Adrien’s slip the previous morning and realized that he must have been talking about Elliot then. “It does not matter if they are dating or not,” he said. “Unless he has a soiled record of his own?”

“Nope,” Trish said with a curt shake of his head. “He left his position in Memphis of his own accord and had a spotless reputation there.”

Andrej rubbed a hand across his face, relieved that so far, none of the signs pointed to Adrien. He wasn’t sure why, but he felt drawn to the kid.

“He’s a cutie pie, too,” Hilary added. “You’d better keep Rosewood away from him.”

“Good damn thing Zayne’s in Texas,” Trish added.

“Okay,” Andrej said, frustrated at his love life being discussed so openly. “Enough of that. He is a kid and I do not think that either Jay or Zayne would be interested in a boy half their age.”

“At least not the narco anyway,” Trish snorted.

That was unfortunately a fair statement, Andrej thought. “What have you found on the others?”

“Nothing all that unexpected,” Hilary said. She got up and sat on the edge of Zayne’s empty desk. “Some drunk and disorderlies, a couple assaults, one cited for proselytizing in a bar…”

“I am thinking that I know who that last one was,” Andrej said. “If what Zayne was telling me was true.”

“Taryn Fairchild,” Hilary asked.

“That is the one,” Andrej said. He wrote something on his notepad and glanced at the girls. “Zayne said she has a very conservative religious bent to her. Who had the assault charges?”

“Tyler Alderman,” Trish supplied. “He’s had um, a few, especially after the bar incident a couple years ago.”

“Which bar incident? The one where he was kissing the girl who was not his wife?”

Hilary chuckled. “Did Zayne give you all the country gossip last night? But yes, things seem to have escalated after that. Before he got caught stepping out on his wife, he averaged maybe one barroom brawl every six or eight months. Each usually after a concert or awards show.”

“And after?”

“After, about one every six to eight weeks,” Hilary said. “Nothing very serious, just your typical drunken asshole taking on another drunken asshole over something typically stupid.”

“Men,” Trish spat.

“In this case, I have to agree with you,” Andrej said.

“Carrie Johnson has one assault charge but that looks to be due to an overzealous fan grabbing at her one too many times,” Trish read off her paper. “She got fed up, slapped his arm, and because he was butthurt and embarrassed, he filed charges.”

“They were dropped though,” Hilary said. “It was kind of big news at the time.”

“Another thing Zayne got correct,” Andrej said, smiling at Hilary. “He said she would be more likely to kick the victim in the man parts than kill him.”

“Wow,” Trish teased. “Reyes is two for two. What did he tell you about Wheeler Abrams?”

“That she was a typical small-town Texas girl,” he said, leaving out all of Zayne’s more colorful descriptors. “Does she have a license to carry concealed? Zayne led me to believe she’d be carrying legal or not.”

“That explains a lot,” Hilary said. “And yes, she does have a license to carry concealed.” She looked at Trish and made a face.

“What are you not telling me?” Andrej leaned forward, arms against the edge of his desk. This case was going to be the death of him if he wasn’t careful.

“She was also charged with assault,” Trish said.

“But with a weapon,” Andrej surmised. He swore in Romanian, eliciting a laugh out of the girls. “What?”

“I’m used to hearing Zayne swear in Spanish, but I’ll never get over hearing you swear, ever.”

Andrej shrugged, too tired to care if he was being improper or not. “Is there anything else?”

“Nothing worth reporting, but it’s all in your file just in case,” Trish said, pointing a finger at the folder she’d given him.

“Thank you,” he said. “I must go to the scene again. Do either of you want to come along?”

“We were hoping you’d ask,” Hilary said, grabbing her jacket. “We’re in.”

Andrej looked at the nameplate hanging on the door and knocked. “Mr. Lupei? It is Detective Zeklos from yesterday. May I come in?”

The door opened and Adrien grinned at him from the other side. “Yeah, of course, come in.” He stepped back and held the door open for Andrej. “Figure out who offed Kyle Anderson yet?”

“No, not yet,” Andrej said with a frown. “Which is why I am back here today. I have brought two other detectives with me and we are going to be conducting follow up interviews today.”

“Starting with me?”

“Starting with you, if that is okay,” Andrej confirmed.

“Yeah, of course,” Adrien said, sitting down on one end of the small couch provided for him. “Have a seat, please.”

Looking around the room, he chose a chair near enough to Adrien to be heard but not close enough to appear as if he were getting chummy. “I want to confirm what you told me yesterday, do you think you could go over it again for me?”

“Sure, why not,” Adrien said, making himself comfortable.

He scratched the back of his neck, gathering his thoughts, before launching into the story again. Andrej listened intently as Adrien took him through getting to the MGM, finding the body, and everything that happened after. There were a few slight variations in the retelling, but all were the usual sort of inconsistencies you’d expect. No red flags.

“And after I left yesterday, did you see or hear anything that seemed out of place?”

Adrien scrunched up his face as he thought. “No, wait, kinda? Wheeler and Taryn were having some kind of intense conversation after you left.”

“How is that odd,” Andrej asked.

“Well, they’re not exactly friends,” he said. “They’re more like complete opposites.”

“So, they are not the type to converse normally?”

Adrien shook his head. “Not at all. They’d rather throw insults than have a friendly chat.”

Interesting. But they were also stuck together for the time being so not too terribly unusual either. “Did you hear any of their conversation?”

“How could I not,” he laughed. “They were practically screaming at each other.”

“What were they discussing,” Andrej asked, pen poised over his notepad.

“Tyler Alderman, mostly,” Adrien said, a sour expression on his face.

“Would you elaborate on that,” Andrej asked.

“What? Oh, sorry,” Adrien said and then started to laugh. “I forget that not everyone is as tuned into the gossip as I am. Tyler’s got a bit of a wandering…” He let his words trail off.

“Eye,” Andrej offered after the silence had gone on for a minute.

“Dick is what I was thinking,” he corrected, the faintest hint of pink coloring his cheeks at the admission. “But I didn’t want to just blurt that out either. But eye works as far as your notes go.”

Once again, Andrej was grateful that Zayne was all the way down in Texas because he’d love this kid. “You sound like my partner,” Andrej said, smiling.

“Is that good or bad?”

“It can go either way with Zayne,” Andrej admitted. “In fact, Zayne told me that Mr. Alderman was caught with a woman who was not his wife recently. Is that what the discussion was about?”

“Sort of, but not that incident you mentioned. Tyler has a reputation of hitting on anything young and pretty. If I heard correctly, he was hitting on Walker and that pissed Taryn off.”

“Is she or has she been involved with Mr. Alderman?”

“No, but I think Taryn has the hots for him,” Adrien said. He leaned back and looked up at the ceiling. “Wheeler, on the other hand, was soaking it up just to annoy Taryn. She can be petty like that.”

“I see,” Andrej said making notes. “Anything else?”

Adrien looked at the door and then back at Andrej. “I’m not sure I heard this right but…”

“Tell me anyway,” Andrej said, leaning forward, encouraging Adrien to talk. “I can clarify as I go through the rest of the follow up interviews. Even if you misheard, it may still be useful.”

He tilted his head and rubbed his chin. “I think I heard Wheeler say ‘Kyle was right’ but I can’t be sure that was it.”

“Kyle was right,” Andrej repeated. “What do you think she meant by that?”

“I have no idea,” Adrien said, slumping against the arm of the couch. “That Taryn is a flake? That Tyler’s a scumbag? It could have been anything. I just hope that it wasn’t what got him killed.”

“I hope not either, Mr. Lupei,” Andrej said. “Is there anything else you can think of that might be helpful?”

He shook his head. “No, I’m sorry.”

“It is okay, you have been more than helpful, thank you.” Andrej rose to his feet and held out his hand to Adrien. “I will be in touch if I need anything more.”

Adrien looked at the hand for a moment before taking it in his own and giving a hearty shake. “Where are you going now?”

“To meet with my fellow detectives and start the other interviews. They are currently ‘seeing what they can see’ or so Hilary informed me.”

“Cool,” Adrien said, standing. “Sounds like fun. Count me in.”

“I do not think you should be involved in this,” Andrej said. “You were the one who found the body after all.”

“Maybe,” he said. “But let’s be real, you don’t suspect me, do you?”

Andrej made a face. “I have no reason to suspect you at the moment, but I cannot have you involved in the questioning either.”

Shrugging, Adrien tried a different route. “I could show one of your detectives around and listen to gossip,” he suggested. “Some of these guys might be more willing to talk to them with me around.”

Yeah, Zayne would love this kid seeing as they were cut from the same aggravating bolt of cloth. “Come with me to find Hilary and Trish,” Andrej finally said. “If one or the other of them are okay with this, then we will see.”

“Awesome,” Adrien shouted. “I always wanted to be a cop.”

“I do not know how to respond to that,” Andrej sighed. “But let’s go find my partners and they can respond for me.”

“Who’s your new partner, Andy,” Trish said when she saw Adrien tagging along behind Andrej. “I thought Zayne was in Texas?”

“You are not funny,” Andrej said, although he smiled as he said it. “This is Austen Ricci,” he said, going with Adrien’s public name as they’d agreed before leaving the dressing room. “Austen, this is Detective Trish Rollins and her partner, Detective Hilary Maxwell.”

“It’s a pleasure,” he said, shaking both their hands. “There is not a single female cop in all of Tucker,” he said. “So, I am pretty stoked to be meeting you both right now.”

“Did you hop him up on caffeine, Zeklos,” Hilary teased.

“I believe he is always like this,” Andrej replied. “While I do not have much data to support my theory, he was like this yesterday, too.”

“Hey now, I think I was a little more subdued yesterday,” Adrien said in defense of himself.

“You’d just literally stumbled over a body yesterday,” Trish pointed out. “I hope like hell you were a little more subdued.”

“Point to the redhead,” he joked.

Trish looked at Andrej and smirked. “So, so glad Reyes is in Texas right now.”

“What is that supposed to mean,” Adrien asked, looking at each detective, trying to figure it out.

“Zayne Reyes is Andy’s partner,” Hilary said. “And you are pretty much Zayne’s type. Young, handsome, and feisty.”

“Oh, I see,” Adrien said, nodding thoughtfully. “I’ll try and be more subdued.”

“No, please be yourself,” Andrej said, done with everything in that moment. “However, he has offered to escort one of you ladies around and talk to those who are not direct suspects at the moment.”

“Good idea,” Hilary said. “They might be more willing to chat if he’s with one of us. Do you know any of the crew?”

“Not really, but I’m known to be a nosy ass so no one will think twice if I’m talking to the crew.” He looked at Andrej and shrugged. “I like knowing how things work, so I ask.”

“That is an admirable quality,” Andrej said. “Who is going to come with me?”

“I’ll do it,” Trish said. “I wanna get a load of this Wheeler chick. Besides, Hil has more tact than I’ll ever have, so it might be safer to let her roam with the kid.”

“Works for me,” Hilary said.

“Same,” Adrien agreed. “Not that I have a say in the matter, but still.”

Hilary looked at Andrej who shrugged. What could he say? He attracted a certain kind of man it seemed.
