Summary: James calls Andrej back to the station and he gets a surprise.
Author’s Note: Sorry for the delay in getting this posted. Things have been hectic here and I’ve been otherwise distracted. On the bright side, I’m finally starting to wrap this all up. Yay!
“I have texted Jay and asked him if he could stop by the computer forensics department to see if they have had time to look at Kyle Anderson’s phone,” he said as they stepped up to Wheeler Abrams’ dressing room door. “He will ask them to move it up the list if they have not had a chance yet.”
“Sounds good to me,” Trish said, knocking on the door. “Ms. Abrams,” she said when Wheeler opened the door and peered out. “We’re with Metro and would like to ask you some follow up questions from yesterday.”
Wheeler frowned as she gave Trish a long, lingering once-over. Her expression lightened when her eyes landed on Andrej. She took in his long, lean form, nice suit, and stern expression and smiled. “I remember you,” she purred. “You’re the one with the sexy accent, aren’t you?” She flicked her eyes towards Trish. “Why is she with you today?”
Trish bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing. “Because even the best of the best need help sometimes, right, Zeklos?”
He gave her a confused look, but nodded, once. “Yes, we could all use a little help sometimes. May we come in?”
“I suppose,” Wheeler said, stepping back so they could come inside. “Would rather it was just you, like yesterday.”
“I think she likes you,” Trish muttered.
“Norocos pe mine,” Andrej muttered.
Stifling a snort, Trish patted him on the back. Luck was definitely not on his side if someone like this had set her sights on him. “Thank you,” she said to Wheeler as they found seats in the small dressing room.
“Sure,” Wheeler said, brushing her bleached hair out of her eyes. “I’m not really sure what I can possibly tell you that I haven’t already said.” She flopped onto the couch and Andrej noticed the distinctive bulge of a sidearm on her left side.
“We can start with the argument you apparently had with Tyler Alderman this morning,” Trish said, eliciting a sour look from the musician.
“Tyler’s a dick,” she spat. “We’re always fighting. So what?”
“We have a witness that says you threatened Mr. Alderman with some photographic evidence of his affair with Ms. Fairchild.” Andrej looked at Trish before continuing. “You said that you had access to the pictures that are supposedly on Mr. Anderson’s phone.”
A flash of surprise crossed Wheeler’s face, but she tamped down on it quickly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Really,” Trish asked. “Our witness was very certain that you weren’t afraid to use the photos to bring Tyler Alderman down.”
Wheeler rolled her eyes. “The guy is a sleaze. He’s cheated more than once, on both of his wives. I doubt he’d care if anyone tried to take him to task for any of it. Besides, he’d just deny it anyway.”
“You are saying our witness is lying,” Andrej asked, looking for clarification and a commitment to her lie.
“Of course he’s lying,” she said, throwing her hands in the air. “Because your witness has to be Ryan Fox, it couldn’t have been anyone else. He loves his gossip a little too much and has been known to exaggerate the truth.”
“I see,” Andrej said, making some notes. “I am only curious as to why he might want to implicate you in something you did not do?”
“Who the hell knows,” she said, disgusted. “But I do know you can’t trust a damn thing that comes out of his mouth.”
“What kind of piece do you carry,” Trish asked, inclining her head towards Wheeler.
“I don’t,” she snapped. “Carry, that is.”
“You are armed now,” Andrej said. He pointed his pen at the bulge he’d noticed earlier. “It looks like something small caliber and compact.”
“Glock 42, most likely,” Trish said.
Wheeler paled.
“We’re law enforcement, honey,” Trish said. “It’s our job to notice things like this, no matter how well you think you’ve hidden it.”
“You do not need a permit to carry a weapon in the state of Nevada,” Andrej said. “However, you do need one to carry a concealed weapon. I will trust that you have one.”
She looked from Andrej to Trish and back. “You’d better not be suggesting I killed that ass, Kyle Anderson,” she growled.
“We are not suggesting anything,” Andrej said, soothing her nerves as best he could. He already knew the gun strapped to her hip hadn’t killed Kyle Anderson, the caliber didn’t match. However, that didn’t mean she wasn’t traveling with another that might have done the deed. “We are only clarifying the laws in our state.”
Wheeler crossed her arms over her chest. “Is there anything else?”
“I don’t think so,” Trish said, rising to her feet, sensing the impending dismissal. “Andy?”
He shook his head. “We will be in touch, Ms. Abrams. Please let us know if you see or hear anything that might help us discover who murdered Mr. Anderson.”
“Whatever,” she grunted as they let themselves out.
“Wow,” Trish said, once the door had closed behind them. “What a day this is shaping up to be. One suspect is keeping something from us, the other is flat out lying to us. Can’t wait to see what the others try and pull.”
Andrej started to respond when his phone dinged. He read the text and sighed. “Jay says that the techs are done with Kyle Anderson’s phone. He does not elaborate but says that there are some things we should see.”
“So, back to the station?”
“For now,” he said, stashing his phone in his pocket. “Let’s find Hilary and see if she wants to stay and conduct the other follow ups or if she’d like to return with us.”
“I can stay with her so you can go have lunch with your boo,” Trish teased. “Oh, and look at photos of two cheaters.”
Rubbing a hand across his face, he sighed. “Can I trust you to behave?”
“Her,” Hilary said, laughing. “Never.”
“You are not reassuring me,” Andrej said, looking at Hilary. “Would you be willing to stay here and finish the follow up interviews with Trish?”
“Sure,” Hilary said. “Where are you headed?”
“Back to the station. Jay has gotten Kyle Anderson’s phone from the forensic people and there are things I need to see.”
“He’s hoping for some lunchtime loving,” Hilary joked.
“What is it with you two,” he muttered. “I am not sure I have time for lunch let alone any extra-curricular activities.”
“No wonder you’re so grouchy,” Trish said.
“I am going back to the station,” he said, ignoring her last comment.
“Can I come with you,” Adrien asked, drawing everyone’s attention. “I mean, I’m stuck here with nothing to do and you’ve already told me that I’m not a suspect so…” He held his hands out and shrugged.
“I am not sure that is a good idea,” Andrej said. “A civilian should not be involved in an investigation.”
“I can keep you company,” Adrien offered. “I know that I’m not your partner and know nothing about police work, but at least you won’t be lonely.”
“Give the kid a break,” Trish said, elbowing Andrej in the side. “He wants to help.”
“And he has all the inside information on these people. Who knows, maybe he can be of assistance.”
“This goes against every departmental policy ever enacted,” Andrej said.
“Call it a ride along,” Hilary suggested. “I’ll even call Mona and have the paperwork on your desk by the time you get back.”
Sighing, Andrej shook his head. “I am not going to win this argument so, if you are decided, we should go, Mr. Lupei.”
“Yes,” he said, giving a quick fist pump. “I’m ready, let’s go.”
Andrej shot the girls a look. “You are responsible for him,” he said, pointing a finger at each of them.
“You don’t have to worry about me,” Adrien said as they left the backstage area, heading towards where Andrej had left his car. “I’ve learned to pay attention and keep myself safe over the years.”
“I would expect you would need to,” he said, pointing towards a silver sedan. “This is mine.”
“Thanks,” Adrien said, following him. “This is a nice ride.”
“I saved a long time for it,” he said, feeling proud of how far he’d come. “I wanted something that would last.”
“Smart move,” Adrien agreed, climbing into the passenger seat. “But I meant what I said. About being careful.”
Andrej glanced at him as he started the car. Waited until the kid felt like he could continue.
“I didn’t want to bring it up before, where everyone could hear, but I had a stalker for over a year. Followed me all over, left dead flowers and mutilated stuffed animals in my hotel rooms.” He shuddered at the memory. “Broke into my house even.” He sighed.
“I am sorry,” Andrej said, reaching out a hand and patting the young man on the arm. “That had to have been frightening.”
“Terrifying,” he said, a sharp, sad laugh escaping him. “Thank god for Elliot. He saved my ass.”
“He is your friend, the detective, back home?”
Adrien nodded, then looked away. “He’s also my boyfriend.”
Andrej nodded. “You are fortunate to have had him.”
“I am,” he agreed. “It doesn’t bother you? That I’m dating a man?”
Andrej laughed. “No, not at all, and it will go no further than here, either. You do not have to worry about it getting out because of me.”
Adrien’s shoulders relaxed. “Thank you, and I appreciate not having to ask.”
“It is okay, I do understand,” Andrej said. “Probably better than you realize. Shouldn’t take more than ten minutes to get to the station. Once you fill out the paperwork, I will feel better about all of this.”
“I promise not to get killed or otherwise harmed until then,” Adrien joked.
“Please do not get killed or harmed even afterwards,” Andrej said, smiling despite the gravity of what he was saying. “I am beginning to like you, I do not want to lose you yet.”
“Took you long enough,” James said, rising from where he’d been sitting on Andrej’s desk. “Who’s your new partner? Thinking of replacing the cowboy after only a few days?”
Andrej gave him a sour look. “Traffic was terrible, Jay,” he grumbled. “This is Adrien Lupei, one of the musicians here for the awards show.” He moved past James and searched his desk until he found the papers he was looking for. He held them out for Adrien, along with a pen. “Fill these out please, so that I no longer feel like I am breaking every rule in the book.”
Smiling, Adrien took the offered papers and looked around. “Where do you want me to sit?”
“Here,” Andrej said, pointing at Zayne’s desk. “My partner is out of town, he will not mind.”
“The hell I won’t,” Zayne’s voice said from behind him.
“What are you doing here,” James asked, turning towards Zayne and embracing him tightly. “I’ve missed you,” he added more quietly.
Zayne patted James heartily on the back before pulling away. “I couldn’t stand it, knowing that you were working this case alone.” He stepped closer to Andrej and his smile faltered. Andrej was not happy to see him if the frown on his face was any indication. “Plus, my family was driving me nuts. Told Dahl that I needed to be here. She understands.” He chuckled and winked at Andrej. “By that I mean she gets that my work is important, that you are important, and that our family is nuts.”
“You are not supposed to be home yet, Zayne,” Andrej reminded him.
“Were you not listening to me, Zek?” He shook his head. “Never mind, I know you were. Should have known you’d be pissed.”
“I am not angry, Zayne, but I am worried that you left your family for less than valid reasons. I am doing okay on my own.” Which was a flat out lie. The case was progressing, slowly, but it was progressing, even if he was emotionally stunted without Zayne in his life. If it hadn’t been for Trish and Hilary stepping in to help, he’d still be mired in interviews.
“Eh, I promised my parents I’d fly them out here in a few months when my mom was feeling better.” He made a face at James. “Not ideal, but it got them off my ass for leaving earlier than I’d planned.”
Andrej’s frown softened a bit. “You should have stayed,” he said, “but I am happy to see you.”
“Thanks,” Zayne said, closing the gap between them and pulling Andrej into a tight hug. He planted a kiss on his partner’s cheek and whispered, “I’ve missed you like crazy,” before releasing the hug.
“I am glad you are home,” Andrej said, smoothing the front of his jacket to keep himself from grabbing Zayne and kissing the daylights out of him. No one, especially Adrien, needed to see that.
“Great,” Zayne said, perching on the edge of Andrej’s desk. “Now that all that’s out of the way, who is this kid sitting at my desk?”
“This is our new part-time partner, Adrien Lupei,” Andrej said.
When the kid looked up from the papers he was filling out, Zayne laughed, loudly. “Holy shit, Zek, how on earth did you wrangle the biggest star in all of country music to be your partner?”
“Honestly, Zayne, he offered.”
“It’s true,” Adrien said, shrugging. “I’m done with the papers, detective.”
“Thank you, Adrien,” Andrej said, taking them from him and giving them a quick look. “Let me give them to our secretary and then we can see what Jay has for us.”
Andrej walked away and Zayne looked at James. “What do you have for us, narco? And why the hell are you here anyway?”
“Helping your partner, Reyes,” James said. “He asked if I could get some stuff for him, and here we are.”
“What stuff,” Zayne asked. “Wait, better brief me on the case first, then we can look.”
“I can do that,” Andrej said, returning from Mona’s desk. “I am sure Jay would like to know what’s going on, too.”
“What about him,” Zayne asked. He directed his gaze towards Adrien. “Should he be hearing this?”
“I’m on an official ride along,” Adrien offered with a smile.
“He also found the body,” Andrej said. “And neither Trish, Hilary, nor I think he is involved. It is a risk, but I do not doubt Trish or Hilary’s instincts.”
“What about yours,” Adrien asked. “Do you doubt your instincts?”
“He doesn’t work off instinct,” Zayne said with a chuckle. “He works off cold, hard facts.”

Date: 2020-04-02 08:42 pm (UTC)My sister and I split the cooking... she cooks M-Th and I cook F-Su. Of course this is better when I'm working and don't have to sit around wondering when she IS cooking!

Date: 2020-04-02 09:52 pm (UTC)Troy always got home much later than I did, so it never made sense to have him cook. Sometimes, he'd grill on the weekend though, so that helped. And I don't think it's fair to make either of my kids cook dinner for all of us. So, I suck it up and do the cooking. Glad your sister helps you out though.

Date: 2020-04-04 12:21 am (UTC)I work two jobs and am not even home for dinner 2 nights so that's what started it. We love our mother... but her in the kitchen? *shudders*

Date: 2020-04-04 11:39 pm (UTC)That makes sense though. Hahaha! My mom's a good cook. So is my MIL but she refuses. On the bright side, my FIL is an even better cook.

It's going to be interesting with Adrien being their ride along.
Sorry things are crazy. *hugs*

Date: 2020-03-21 09:46 pm (UTC)I should have known he'd try, but he snuck in on me, too. You know Andrej will make sure he does. Plus, his sisters. He's screwed. LOL
He's more of a tag-along, but hopefully the rest doesn't disappoint.
Eh, that's just life. This whole COVID-19 thing is only adding to what is already a crazy life. :)
Lord, this scene I just watched on Stumptown reminded me of Andy and Zayne.
"Cops with cops, it never works."
"And us, in the same unit?"
"Everybody's noses in our business, and the gossip..."
LOL
