The wind howled outside the cabin, causing Travis to shudder. He’d built up a good fire in the hearth, so the house was warm, but there was something about how the wind screamed through the trees that froze him to his bones. It made him think that there were evil things out there in the forest surrounding White Pine.

His dad had always told him he’d had an overactive imagination, and he’d been right. But Liam had also been the one to encourage him to pursue his career as an author, so Travis really couldn’t complain either.

Ethan was at work and wouldn’t be home for several more hours. He’d never wished for his husband more than he was right then. Brennan mewed from her spot at his feet and he remembered that he wasn’t alone.

Bending to scratch the cat behind her furry ears, Travis said, “Go find your brother. I’m going to get my book and crash on the couch.”

As if she understood him, Brennan started meowing it that way that always brought her brother, Ryan, running. Travis chuckled and went to retrieve his book from the bedroom where he’d left it. When he returned to the living room, he saw both cats sitting on the arm of the couch, waiting for him. Rather, they were waiting for him to pull the afghan off the back of the couch so they could crawl onto him and snooze.

The crack of a tree branch breaking outside the window sent the cats flying for cover. Snow was lashing at the glass now, piling in drifts at the base of the house. Travis sighed and prayed that Ethan was able to get home safely in the morning. It was the only thing he regretted about making his home outside of White Pine. When the weather got bad, he was trapped. And with Ethan working in town at the station, he might be stuck there, too.

Travis texted Ethan and smiled at his husband’s reassuring response. He always knew how to put Travis’ worries to rest, just one more reason why he loved Ethan so much. Comforted for the moment, Travis returned to the couch and picked up his book. He was glad that he wasn’t in the middle of one of his usual thrillers or he’d never be able to settle down. But, as luck would have it, he’d picked up a cheesy, cozy mystery and it was exactly what he needed right then. If he could only get through the storm until Ethan got home, he’d be fine.

Ethan always made everything better.

Agreed. As long as you have that one person, what more could you need?
