“Damnit,” James shouted, slamming his cards down on the table. “That’s one hot ass lucky streak you’ve got going.”

Zayne swept the cards into a pile with the edge of his hand, ignoring the redhead’s outburst. “It’s not a lucky streak, gingerbread, it’s called skill.”

“Yeah, whatever,” James grunted. “If it was only two hands in a row, I could write it off to you being a better poker player than I am. But five in a row? That’s being lucky.”

“What are you two fighting about now,” Hilary asked, coming out of the kitchen with Andrej and Trish in tow. “I thought you promised to get along?”

“I’m trying, Hil,” Zayne said, winking at his one-time girlfriend. “It’s not my fault the narco’s a sore loser.”

“I’m not a sore loser, Reyes,” James snapped back. “But you’re either really freaking lucky or you’re cheating.”

“I’m not cheating, Rosewood, and don’t you dare accuse me of it either,” Zayne warned.

James scowled. “Did you make him some kind of gypsy good luck charm, Andy?”

“First, do not use that word, ‘gypsy’,” Andrej said, exhausted at having to now remind James about the word. “Second, the only thing I have ever made him is a protection charm that he keeps on his keychain.”

Trish laughed. “Well, I guess that explains why he doesn’t get his ass kicked more often than he does.”

“Between Andy’s protection charm and Zayne’s natural charm, I’m not surprised,” Hilary added.

Zayne made a face. “I’m not sure if you two are making fun of me or not.”

“When in doubt, we’re always making fun of you, Reyes,” Trish joked.

“So, no lucky charm,” James asked, sounding a bit deflated.

“I am sorry, Jay, but no, I have not made anything of the sort for anyone,” Andrej said.

“Well, shit,” James muttered.

“One more hand, narco,” Zayne asked, holding the cards up.

James sighed. “Sure. Why the hell not, right? Deal away.”

Andrej shook his head. “We are leaving, but we should be back by five o’clock. Text me and let me know what you two want to eat by four, bine?”

Bueno,” Zayne replied.

“Really gotta learn another language,” James muttered, causing Trish to snicker.

“Good,” Hilary said. “Be back in a couple hours. Andy? Will you drive?”

Nodding, Andrej led them out of the house and into the garage. Trish paused, her hand on the rear passenger’s side of the car. “Andy?”

He looked up at her, curious. “Yes?”

“Be honest, did you make Reyes a lucky charm?”

“I did not,” he replied, grinning. “However, Jay has a – what do you call it? A tell?” Trish nodded, confirming it was the right word. “He scratches his left ear just there,” he lifted a finger to his face and tapped the spot where his ear met his face, “whenever he has a good hand. Zayne noticed it, mentioned it to me, and I observed Jay while they played a few hands last weekend. He was not wrong.”

“Is Zayne ever going to clue Rosewood in,” Hilary asked, getting into the car.

“I am not sure,” Andrej said, settling into his seat and starting the car. “Maybe, once he is done annoying Jay by beating him at poker.”

“Which will be the fifteenth of never,” Trish laughed as they pulled out of the garage and headed towards their destination. “Because we all know how much Zayne loves to annoy everyone.”

“Especially James,” Hilary added.

“I may never find peace,” Andrej muttered. “Because you are not wrong either.”

At least he had the next few hours without having to listen to them antagonize each other, he figured. If the house was still standing when they returned, well, maybe that was a sign they were working through their issues. Either that or his builder was better than he thought they were.
