Started the year out pretty decently, I think.

My 2021 Goodreads Reading Challenge is set at 100 books. Last year, I managed 108, so I think I ought to be able to do at least that much again this year.

What I read:

Drowned Country by Emily Tesh. Library e-book. The second in the Greenhollow Duology. Beautifully written and a bit sad, but a great set of stories. There’s a very light m/m romance in these as well and it only adds to the beauty of it all.

Thriller: Stories to Keep You Up All Night edited by James Patterson. Owned print. A collection of short stories I’ve been trying to finish for way too many years. Nice little collection of thrilling stories.

NYPD Red 6 by James Patterson. Library e-book. My second favorite series of his. And miracles of miracles, Kylie didn’t make me want to chuck my Kindle.

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas. Audible plus audiobook. I love anything and everything Sherlock Holmes, especially all these odd takes on the character. This was a pretty good version of a female Sherlock and the narrator was delightfully posh.

We Thought We Knew You: A Terrifying True Story of Secrets, Betrayal, Deception, and Murder by M. William Phelps. Library e-book. A friend of mine is a big-time true crime fan and asked me if I’d read this. I hadn’t, but the story intrigued me. An obsessed young woman who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, decides to pay him back by poisoning his mother. It was one wild ass ride.

Straight to the Heart by S. J. Coles. E-ARC via LASR. A nice little mystery with a m/m romance thrown in. Sharpie, if you’re reading this, THIS was the book with the bonehead FBI agent. I still can’t believe he was so freaking stupid. That said, overall it was a good story.

Kind of a Big Deal by Shannon Hale. E-ARC via Netgalley. My first DNF in some time. I wanted to like this book, I really wanted to enjoy it, but I could not get into it.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab. Library e-book. A little slow at first, but once it picks up, it gets really interesting. I don’t think I’d want to live forever and have no one ever remember me.

What I’m currently reading:

Year One by Nora Roberts. Owned e-book. Now, before you say anything, this is not your typical Nora Roberts book. It’s very dystopian, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi and very, very good. I started this in late 2019 and am trying to clean up some of these really old books on my currently reading list.

The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher. Library e-book. I stupidly put a ton of books on hold at the library not thinking they’d all come up at once. Hahaha. I loved her book The Wives, so I’m hoping this is as twisty and funky as that was.

A Curious Incident by Vicki Delany. E-ARC via Netgalley. The sixth in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series. I get a kick out of these Sherlock-related cozy mysteries. Gemma was annoying in the beginning of the series, but she’s slowly growing on me. A lot of fun.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. Owned audiobook. Started reading this last year but never finished it. I have a little less than 6 hours left in the audio, hoping to finish it this week if I can. I get about 40 minutes travel time a day to and from work, so let’s hope.

I’m not sure what I’ll read next, but this is my over-the-top list of library holds:

The Awakening by Nora Roberts
Magpie Murders by Anothony Horowitz
The Last to See Her by Courtney Evan Tate
Out of the Storm by B. J. Daniels
The Turn by Kim Harrison
Beach Read by Emily Henry
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

So yeah, that’s… a lot.

You are getting there. Go for the B.J. Daniels' one. She's usually a quick, good read.

Thanks. I'm giving it a good effort! It should be available soon. I feel in love with her stuff a couple years ago and you're right. Fast, suspenseful reads.
