If not, it's cool. But since I actually participated this week, I thought I'd share.
Topic was recent things we'd Googled and my responses are here.
And even if you don't want to go read, let me know what kind of weird shit you've been researching lately.

Date: 2021-05-19 08:33 pm (UTC)I checked my work comp for my googles since that's where I currently am (home will be different as I'm logged into gmail there), and came up with:
Free who owns property nz: because I was trying to find out if I could locate the owner of a property without going through work channels. It was for work, but we're a bit limited these days on searching for things (due to privacy law issues) unless it's part of the job we're working on, and I was just being curious, though it was for something I was passing on to someone for a possible case. They'll find it if needed for their case though, so no biggie. And the answerr was no, I couldn't get this info without signing up to a particular website, which I wasn't really into doing.
covid in wellington sewage: because I heard the end of a news report on the radio that there was covid traces found in a wellington sewage test, and I missed the rest of what they said, so I wanted to know whether it meant a new case was in the community here. They had decided it was from cases recently in isolation, and there was no danger, so here's hoping that's true, although at least it's in Wellington and not Auckland for a change!
charged more at supermarket: because another news report mentioned people being overcharged at a certain line of supermarkets and I missed which ones it was, so I wanted to know if it affected me since I'd just shopped earlier in the week. It wasn't my supermarket, so yay!

Date: 2021-05-19 08:43 pm (UTC)It's weird because they TEACH us the metric system, we USE it in science classes and yet... I do agree, it's so much freaking easier that they have got to be holding onto it out of stubborn pride at this point. Although, my glass measuring cups (for liquids) and one set of my measuring spoons all have the metric equivalents on them, so I'm sort of prepared?
OOOH! And you'll love this. There's a button on the steering wheel where I can switch between mph and kph I guess in case I drive into Canada or something. Anyway, I glanced down at my speedometer the other day and it said I was going 104! I about had a heart attack until I realized it no longer was registering in miles but kilometers. God, I thought I was going to get pulled over for going nearly 40 MPH over the speed limit. Hahaha.
LOL — gotta love it when a paywall or giving up our anonymity ruins our curiosity.
Crossing my fingers that it is true!
We've been hearing things like that for the last year and i don't doubt it's happening. I've noticed prices creeping up here and there and it's just insane. Glad it wasn't your store though.
I think it's interesting to see what others have searched for though because we all have our reasons, no matter how weird something sounds.

Date: 2021-05-19 09:15 pm (UTC)HAH! I was amused. I was driving a work car yesterday and it's a new electric one with all sorts of fancy stuff going on. I went onto a motorway (speed limit 100kph mostly) and when I went about 5kms over this (to pass a slow truck), and at any time it thought I did something weird, this woman's voice said "Obey all the road rules" (or something; I can't quite recall the wording), and it made me feel a bit naughty! It's hard for me to even remember what a 40mph speed limit looks like, because I've never actually driven in miles! Oddly though, we still call the distance your car's done mileage, because kilometerage is too weird! ;-)
Oh, and I think they have those conversion things because there's maybe a standard fitting, and the cars, no matter where they're made, can be sold in different countries. Of course one of the things we find is that cars made in different places they can have the fittings put the opposite way. We drive on the left, like Britain, so you expect the windscreen wipers on the left of the steering wheel and the lights and indicators on the right, but every now and then you'll find them round the other way, which is very confusing when you're used to it beingt he other way, and wipers go on at very unexpected times! LOL
The supermarket prices thing was about the shelves having one price and the checkout charging another, so a lot of people will be looking for refunds, no doubt! Thankfully it wasn't my usual one, as it's so much hassle having to go back to sort it out, especially as I shopped somewhere different from my usual branch.
Absolutely on the searches front! ;-)

Date: 2021-05-19 09:30 pm (UTC)That's hysterical! Years ago, I was driving Troy's truck to my mom's house and using GPS to get there. I changed lanes to get around a slow car in the same direction as the upcoming offramp. The GPS voice yelled back at me, "DO NOT EXIT THE FREEWAY!" and I yelled back, "I'M NOT, I'M TRYING TO GET AROUND A SLOWPOKE!" Thank god the kids had their headphones in. LOL
Hahaha! I can't imagine how confusing it'd be to be fumbling around on one side of your steering column looking for something that wasn't there!
OOOH. Okay, I misread. Now that would cause a riot. I'd be so mad. It's frustrating enough when something is put back in the wrong place and you think it's one price and turns out to be another. If it was deliberate, they'd be in a ton of trouble here in the US. If it was accidental, then it just sucks that they weren't more careful.

Date: 2021-05-19 09:49 pm (UTC)I'm not really good with voices in the car — I always turn the GPS vocal off, as I can check the screen, dammit! I'm usually already doing or aware of what they want me to do, but this voice was separate from the GPS and as I wasn't familiar with the car I don't know if it had an off button. Your story made me LOL too — sounds like the kind of thing I'd yell back too!
Oh yeah, it's crazy. The last thing you expect is the wipers coming on when you need an indicator!
Yeah, I'm not sure if it was accidental or what, but thankfully most people here are not litigious, because it's not something we're used to, but I can bet a lot of people would be lining up for refunds!!!

Date: 2021-05-20 08:50 pm (UTC)I can understand that. Not sure I want my actual car talking to me though.
Exactly!
That's good to hear. I'm not that way either, but soooo many Americans are sue happy so you know there'd be a flood of lawsuits. But yes, a refund is required, thanks!
