Title: Under the Desert Sun
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fiction
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos/Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 664
Summary: The summer sun is bright and blinding and Andrej’s without his sunglasses.
Author’s Note: Written for the weekend challenge at 1_million_words. My movie prompt was: An American Tail. Not sure I really kept with the prompt, but this was the best I had in me at the moment.
When he’d left his home and moved to Paris, he’d always thought he’d return to Romania someday. Probably not to the same, tiny village that he’d grown up in, but to one of his homeland’s larger cities. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, or even Brașov. But instead of Transylvania and the Carpathians, he somehow managed to land in the heart of the Mojave Desert.
Which was not even close to the climate of his beloved Romania. Especially not during the summers, which could be brutally hot and dry here in the desert. Rain, something he had learned to dread when at home and, even in Paris, to a degree, had become something he craved, missed with a passion he didn’t know existed.
The bears, on the other hand, could stay in Eastern Europe.
Andrej squinted into the bright, desert sun wishing he’d replaced the sunglasses that James’ nephew had accidentally broken the weekend before. Using his hand to shield his eyes, he glanced at Zayne.
“I’ve got a hat in the car, Zek,” he said. “And it’s a ballcap, not a cowboy hat. Although, I do think you’d look adorable in my old Stetson.”
Frowning, Andrej shook his head. “I am fine, even if I am a bit blinded by the sun.”
“Welcome to Vegas,” Zayne chuckled. “I used to think nothing could be worse than Texas.” He shook his head. “And then I moved here and proved myself wrong.”
“It is not this bright in Romania. Ever.”
“All the vampires would move to Hungary if it was,” Zayne teased. “I’m going to get you my hat,” he said, giving Andrej’s shoulder a squeeze. “You can be mad later, but at least you’ll be able to see better.”
Knowing that this wasn’t the hill he wanted to die on, Andrej let Zayne jog off towards the car. When he returned, he had a black hat in his hands. Taking it from Zayne, he turned it over in his hands and smiled. “You are allowing me to wear your Knights hat, Zayne? I am honored.”
“Oh shut up,” Zayne laughed. “Now, if that was my Rangers hat, you know you were special. But this, I can get another if I need to.”
Secure in the knowledge that, despite Zayne’s words, he was special to the Texan, he situated the cap on his head, hating how it felt, but appreciating the fact he didn’t have to squint half as much as before. His head would thank him later.
“All good, Zek?”
He winked at Zayne. “I believe I can function properly now. Where is the body?”
“This way,” he said, pointing to where he’d seen a strip of crime scene tape fluttering in the wind.
“I do not think I will ever get used to this sun,” he muttered.
“You complain about it a lot less than you used to,” Zayne pointed out. “When we were first partnered up, every day you’d say something about how bright the damn sun was.” He shot Andrej an affectionate glance. “Even in the winter, which I found highly amusing.”
“This is not Romania,” he said. “It is not the weather I was used to. I was astounded that there was never a cloud in the sky.” He shook his head. “Sometimes, even when it rained, there would be one tiny cloud and miles of blue sky. It was intimidating.”
Zayne snorted. “I’ll have to take you home with me sometime and show you what wide open sky really looks like.”
“I think I would like that,” Andrej said. “However, we have a murder to solve first.”
“Damn dead guys, ruining all our fun,” Zayne joked.
“I do not understand you sometimes,” Andrej muttered, following Zayne towards a group of officers standing near the crime scene tape. But then, there was still so much he didn’t understand about this country and its inhabitants. One day, he figured, he might have a better grasp on all things American, but today was not that day.
