Title: Roll of the Dice
Fandom: None
Pairing: Delaney + Rodrigo
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 457
Summary: She saw him watching and couldn’t help herself.
Author’s Note: Written for the Torrid Tuesday challenge at 1_million_words. One of the prompts was ‘eye fucking in public’. I might revisit this prompt one day, but for now, here you go.
Delaney leaned against the side of the craps table, watching the people crowding around, watching the chick with the dice in her hand. Craps wasn’t her game, it left entirely too much to chance, even as far as gambling went. If she were going to throw her hard-earned money away on a whim, she was going to throw it at something she at least felt like she could control. Something like blackjack or poker.
The bottle blonde blew on the dice, shook them, then tossed. A collective groan rose from everyone present when she didn’t get the roll she needed. Delaney didn’t understand the game one bit, so she had to trust that the crowd was right. Although, judging by the blonde’s anguished face as her chips were swept away, they were – as they say – right on the money.
But she hadn’t stopped by this table to watch some tourist toss their fortune away. No, she’d stopped because of him.
Delaney had noticed him as she was walking past. He’d been hard to miss as tall and lanky as he was, standing just behind the dealer. A shock of dusky hair over dark, piercing eyes. It was like he was searching for something in all this chaos of the casino and, when his eyes had met hers, she felt like he’d been looking for her. Obviously, it wasn’t possible because he didn’t know her, couldn’t know her, and yet, she was drawn to him.
So, she’d stopped, leaned against the faux leather of the table’s padded rail. Not wanting to be obvious, she’d not watched him directly, but once she’d noticed he was openly staring in her direction, thick forearms crossed, biceps bulging under his crisp, white dress shirt, she dropped all pretense and stared right back.
His eyes bore into hers, as if he was searching for the meaning of life in the depths of her soul. It made her stomach heat, and her knees go weak. And when he smiled, she was sure she was going to combust. When he grinned and tipped his head to the side, an invitation if she ever saw one, she may have actually combusted, if only a little.
Biting the inside of her cheek, she smiled back and made her way over to where he stood, waiting. He never took his eyes off her and it was a revelation for Delaney. How, why, she didn’t care. All that mattered was holding this handsome man’s attention for just a bit longer. Through a drink or two, maybe. That would be enough.
What happened next, she thought as he slipped his arm through hers, was a mystery. However, when it came to finding out, she was ready to take a gamble.
