Title: The Perlis of Living with a Writer Peril 9: Interesting – 2014 A to Z Challenge at
1_million_words
Fandom: White Pine Saga original fiction
Pairing: Travis Murphy/Ethan McDowell
Rating: G
Word Count: 689
Author’s Notes: The boys’ story starts here, if you’re interested.
Everyone always asked exactly what it was that had drawn him to Travis Murphy. On the surface, they seemed like complete opposites, especially if you only knew the two of them superficially. Ethan admitted, if only rarely, that he could be a bit prickly at times. Travis, as helpful as ever, would be the first to tell you that was an understatement because, let’s be honest, Ethan had the tendency to be a bit of a tight ass all the time.
And that was the biggest difference between himself and Murphy. While Ethan was reliable, responsible, and well, boring, Travis was anything but. His boyfriend was entertaining, amusing, and just a tiny bit flighty, given half the chance. Basically, he was everything Ethan hadn’t ever wanted in a partner and yet, somehow all of these things held him where he was. It was a conundrum, that much was for sure.
Don’t get him wrong, Travis had a lot of redeeming qualities. He was kind, considerate, and adorable, to name just a few. They actually also had quite a bit in common as well, the love of a good story, cuddling on winter nights, and each other. As much as all of that helped to keep them together, none of that had brought them together. What had brought them together was a) as snowstorm and b) the fact that Travis Murphy was the most interesting person Ethan had ever met.
Travis’ sordid past notwithstanding, that he had chosen to live the life of a recluse and spend his days staring at a cursor flashing on his monitor intrigued Ethan. What could cause such an amiable, likable person to live a solitary life was beyond him. He hadn’t ever asked, mostly because he figured Travis wouldn’t give him the truth if he did, but it hadn’t stopped him from wondering – and putting together a theory or two.
Which led him to his next point. The simple fact that Murphy could concoct these intricate, surprising plots seemingly out of nowhere fascinated him. How Travis made these obscure connections in his brain amazed him and half tempted him to get him a job as a detective up in Minden Lake. Not that Travis would ever go for something like that, but the city could use a detective with the ability to think outside the box on occasion. Lord only knew, the ones he’d worked with up there couldn’t think outside the rule book, let alone get creative solving a crime.
Since meeting Travis’ parents for the first time, his interest in the boy had only grown. Having been arrested more times than any other youth in White Pine, Travis had developed an odd relationship with the town’s sheriff. They’d found an uneasy truce since Murph had reached adulthood, but he had no doubt the boy’s past still was fresh in the cop’s mind. Although he’d managed to get himself into quite a bit of trouble, he’d never actually done anything harmful to anyone or destructive to anything. And yet, he managed to get picked up by local law enforcement enough times to set a record in the tiny place.
That last tidbit amused Ethan to no end. That a kid with such a record would end up living – engaged, he reminded himself – to a cop, was a bit serendipitous. Made him take their improbable relationship a little more seriously. Also gave him reason to wonder what was really going on inside the crazy writer’s head.
In the end, it didn’t really matter to Ethan what Travis’ reasons were for doing the things he did. Why he’d chosen to be a writer when it was obvious his brain was wired for bigger and better things. He just chalked it up to being part of his boyfriend’s charm. His mystique. The more time they spent together, the more he discovered about his hermit partner. And the more captivated and intrigued he became. Ethan knew he’d never fully understand what made Murphy tick, but for now, he was content to sit back and watch it all unfold.
It was better than anything on television, cable included.
