“Okay, thanks,” Bosch said, ending the call. He looked up and found his partner watching him. “Yes?”

“That your brother the lawyer,” Jerry Edgar asked.

Bosch laughed. “I’m surprised you didn’t refer to him as my brother the vampire.”

Jerry shrugged. “Not much difference is there?”

Harry couldn’t argue with that logic. “He’s willing to meet with us at his office tonight,” Harry said instead. “Six o’clock.”

Nodding, Jerry said, “That works. Gives us time to work on all the rest of this mess while we wait.”
--
It was five till six when Harry knocked on the door to his half-brother’s office. The door swung open and a perky, attractive blonde stood watching them. “Harry?”

“Lorna,” he said, smiling. “How’ve you been?”

She stepped aside, allowing them into the office. “Oh, you know. Good days, bad days, working with a vampire days.”

He did his best to contain the chuckle brewing in his belly. “Lorna, this is my partner, Jerry Edgar. Edgar, this is my ex-sister-in-law, Lorna.”

The two shook hands and made pleasantries. “I’ll go get Mickey. He’s um…” She inclined her head towards what Harry knew to be a makeshift breakroom.

“Gotcha,” Harry said, letting her off the hook.

“Harry,” he heard Mickey boom a few moments later. Turning, Harry saw his brother and grinned. He couldn’t help it, despite being a vampire and a defense attorney, he loved the guy. Mickey pulled Harry to him in a crushing embrace.

“Easy, there, Mickey,” Bosch said, patting his brother on the back. “You’ll crush me.”

“Nah,” Mickey said, releasing his hold on Bosch. “Your shifter strength is nearly as good as mine.”

Harry wasn’t so sure about that, but thankfully, his healing abilities were damn near on par with those of the vampire. “You ready to talk? Edgar and I here are on a time crunch.”

Mickey flicked his eyes to the man standing beside Bosch and smiled. “Nice to meet you,” he said, holding out his hand.

Bosch frowned, feeling the waves of vampire woo-woo rolling off his half-brother. “Don’t,” Harry said, stopping Jerry before he could touch Mickey. “And you,” he said, turning to Mickey, “stop that. Right now.”

Mickey blinked. “Stop what?”

“All that glamour bullshit,” Harry said, waving an angry hand up and down the length of Mickey’s body. “He’s an officer of the law, remember?”

Mickey licked his lips and smiled sheepishly at Jerry Edgar. “Sorry about that,” he said, sounding sincere enough. “Old habits and all.”

“Yeah, okay,” Jerry said. Mickey was holding out his hand again, causing Bosch to get a look from his partner. “Is it okay now?”

Harry glared at his brother for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, it’s safe. He’s turned off the whatever in the hell it is that he has.”

Shrugging, Mickey took Jerry’s hand and gave it a shake. “It’s self-defense you know. Get them before they get you?”

“Sure,” Jerry said. “Sure, boss.”

“What is it you need to know,” Mickey said, making his way towards his desk. He motioned for the two men to sit before he took his place behind the desk. “There’s a whole lot of vampire lore out there, so if I knew where I needed to start…?”

Bosch looked to Edgar and nodded. Jerry produced a file and opened it. Across the desk, he slid several crime scene photos. “This is what we need to know about.”

Mickey watched Jerry for a long moment before glancing down at the photos. The first one he picked up showed the puncture wounds in the back of a woman’s naked knee. Mickey made a face and set it aside. The next showed similar marks near her elbow. Disgusted, he tossed it onto the desk.

“What does that face mean,” Edgar asked.

“It means,” Mickey said, his accent growing thicker as his annoyance ramped up, “that this looks like the work of an out-of-control fledgling.”

“Fledgling,” Jerry asked, looking from Bosch to Mickey.

“A baby vamp of sorts,” Harry explained.

“A newly turned vamp,” Mickey corrected.

“What’s the difference,” Jerry wanted to know.

“A baby vamp is just that – a baby that some idiot thought it’d be funny to turn.”

“Same thing,” Harry announced, ignoring his brother’s explanation.

“What do you call a new shifter then, Mr. Smarty Pants?”

Bosch grinned. “Pup. Cub. Chick. Kitten. Leveret.” Harry shrugged. “Depends on what they are.”

“What the hell is a leveret,” Mickey asked, giving Harry a confused look.

“A newborn hare,” Lorna said from her chair on the other side of the office. When she noticed everyone staring at her, she said, “What? I helped Hayley with a project once.”

Harry snorted. “Can we get back to the case here,” he asked gently, not wanting to offend Lorna or cause Mickey to go off on another of his tangents.

“Right,” Jerry said. “How do you know it’s a fledgling and not a – a what do you call an adult vampire?”

“A vampire,” Mickey said, grinning and showing off a bit of fang.

“Stop that, Haller,” Bosch said, a hint of a growl in his voice.

“Boys,” Lorna said, not looking up from her magazine, “both of you behave. You have a mortal in your midst, maybe act like you’re not both creatures of the night for five minutes?”

Mickey rolled his eyes. “I know this because a more experienced vampire would have hidden the bites better, either by concealing the places they drank from or by taking more care while drinking, thus lessening the appearance of the punctures.” He looked at the photos again. “And they would have likely only drawn from one spot, not two.”

“Three,” Harry corrected. “The other photo was not uh, how do I put this? Fit for public consumption.”

Mickey scrunched his face up. “Inner thigh, I’m guessing?”

“You’d be right,” Harry agreed.

“Fuck,” Mickey muttered.

“Does that point to anyone in particular,” Jerry asked, not sure if it was an unusual spot to drink from or not.

“Unfortunately, I think that it might,” Mickey groaned. “We have had three new fledglings join the ranks recently. Two female, one male.” He made that face again while shaking his head. “A very young male, late teens to early twenties. His sire got a little overexcited, shall we say, while indulging her boy one night.”

“Ah,” Bosch said, catching on. “You think it’s this kid?”

“I have no doubt,” Mickey agreed. “Let me speak with his sire and I’ll get back to you.”

Harry stood and Jerry Edgar followed. “Thanks, Mickey, I owe you.”

Mickey stood and shook his brother’s hand. “Don’t ever say that to any other vamp, Harry.”

Bosch grinned. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Yay! I just wish I knew if this was in character for him or not. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it up today.

Of course I do! <3

No worries. It's in character for Mickey. He has a tendency to be haughty and arrogant, which is more defensive than offensive ir so he likes to tell himself.
