Day 22

They walked through the snow, hand in hand, marveling at the fact they drew so much less attention here in Minden Lake than they did in White Pine.  Although the denizens of White Pine always referred to it as ‘the big city’, it really wasn’t.  Not in the grand scheme of things anyway.  But, it was larger than White Pine by a lot, even though that really didn’t take much, honestly.

Ethan tucked himself into the crook of Travis’ arm, sucking up the body heat bleeding off his stout frame.  “Explain to me again why we’re doing more shopping?  Didn’t Amazon have it all?”

“Oh, if Amazon doesn’t have it,” Travis laughed, snugging against his partner, “then it doesn’t exist.  But that’s not the point.  You can’t have Christmas without a little hectic  shopping, can you?”

Yes, yes you could.  But he couldn’t convince Travis of that so he kept it to himself.  “If you say so.  As far as I’m concerned, it’s not worth the hassle.”

“Aw, come on and live a little,” Travis teased.  Tugging him by the arm, he drew him into a shop just off Main Street.

Reluctantly, he ducked out of the cold and followed Travis into the store.  It had to have been a new addition as it hadn’t been here the last time he’d been in town just a few months ago.  Looking around, he instantly knew why Travis had chosen to escape inside this particular business.  One wall was covered in every kind, cut, and color of stationery you could imagine.  Travis gravitated towards the paper, understandably.  He picked up sheet after sheet, testing it’s heft, it’s feel, and it’s appeal to LaWanda, he assumed.

Ethan turned a stamp over in his hands, looking at the cartoon platypus etched into the rubber.  The turquoise mammal wore a fedora and a smirk.  Grinning, he wrapped his fingers around it and headed over to where Travis stood, browsing through colored ink pens.

He looked up at his approach, holding out a lime green felt-tip marker.  “What do you think of this color?”

“That it’d give a normal person a headache?”  He took it from Travis and handed over the rubber stamp.  “You need this though.”

“Hey, it’s Agent P,” he cried.

“Why am I not surprised you know who this is?”

“Because, I’m a giant child?”  He grinned and kissed Ethan’s forehead.  “I love him, you know.”

“How can you not love a crime fighting platypus, Travis?  Find anything else you fancy?”  Ethan looked around and instinctively knew he had found more than he could handle.

“What don’t I like in here?  The origami safari animals, the rainbow of markers, all of this paper?”  He waved a hand encompassing it all.  “I could get lost in here.”

Indeed, it was a writer’s heaven.  Tucking this place away for a later date, he tugged on Travis’ arm.  “Okay then, let’s go get you a stamp pad and get out of here before you break the bank.  Both our banks.”

“Aw, you’re no fun,” Travis sulked adorably.

“You say that now, but when it comes time to buy food later, you’ll thank me.”  He reached for a magenta ink pad, knowing that brighter was better with Murphy.  “And look at it this way, there are a million holidays and your birthday coming up so we can make many excuses to come around here.  Okay?”

He nodded.  “Okay, I can live with that.  You think we can go into the candy store before we leave, too?”

You really are a man-child, aren’t you, Travis? “Of course we can.”

Ethan paid for the supplies they didn’t really need and linked his arm with his boyfriend’s.  Leading him back into the cold, they braced themselves against the wind and headed for the candy store.  Of all the things that Murphy had going for him on any given day, the simple fact that he was so damn easy to make happy always topped the list.  It was a blessing in disguise.

Okay, I'm chuckling to myself at this one. Yes, we have a store like this in our local mall. Paper! Pretty paper and all kinds of goodies. I hate to say how much I just love that store. Even just to look. ;)

I love these places, but they seem to be few and far between these days. The one I mention here - it's called Paper Source - just opened up a couple months ago and Tay and I are in love. I've always loved to hand write notes on pretty stationery and it's becoming a lost art. *sigh*
