I cannot with people. I've been reading more and more about how people's attention spans have shortened. How movies have started repeating the plot points during the movie because they know the audience is on their phones, only paying half attention. I know it's true, I've seen it. But good lord, are you not paying attention at work, too?
A lady just called and asked for Joel. I told her he was on the other line and could I take a message or did she want to call back. Her response? "Is there a number I can reach him at?"
So, I'm thinking she wasn't listening to me until I asked if she wanted to leave a message.
Wish I had that option. 🤣🤣🤣
Anyway... if this is the most annoying thing that happens all day (considering I do work with Joel), I'll be grateful.

Date: 2026-02-06 07:57 pm (UTC)Honestly, it's so true, but when those of us who've been around long enough to have patience are watching something (esp. on TV where they tell you what's coming after the ads, then remind you what happened before them, and then do a recap again before it finishes... and with how many repetitive ads come on during the five-minutely during the show, it's actually nuts-making. I am not that dumb. And you wouldn't believe it, but we currently have an ad on tv (and free to air streaming) which is advertising advertising. I am not kidding. It's some outfit who have stats on how many more people the advertisers can capture by placing their ads on free to air tv.
And... I went slightly off topic there, but I do want to say how much tv I mute when it's repetitive, and yes, that's pretty much all the ads, so that company isn't very clever either, because the tv may be on for the ads, doesn't mean anyone's paying attention (and full circle - they are probably scrolling on their phone instead).

Generally, I don't watch anything that has commercials — I got rid of my cable years ago, so unless I'm watching the Roku Channel or hockey, I don't have commercials. But, that's when I pick up my book. Hahaha.

Date: 2026-02-07 10:57 am (UTC)Yeah, right, and I guess they're watching tv too? I was tempted to offer them feedback about how watching the same repetitive shit actually puts me off buying their crap, but figure I don't care enough to bother because ad time is for doing other stuff anyway. We get SO MANY more ads now than we did when I was growing up. *sigh*
Yeah, we have several paid streaming services so we can avoid ads when we want, but there's nothing quite like planned programming- its on a schedule, I know when to watch what I'm interested in, vs trying to decide what i stream that suits us both/all three (it's hard to find time to just stream what I want) and then remembering to go back to it when maybe one of us isn't as invested though the other likes it - and strangely, most nights there's always a show or two most of us like on free-to-air, or we can watch on demand (still has ads, but a little fewer). And like you, I pick up sometimes a book, sometimes sudoku or a crossword, or I do dishes/make coffee during the ads!

I can completely understand where you're coming from there. Cable just got too expensive and so out it went. But many of the things I watch — like Abbott Elementary — are on Hulu the next day, so I still have a bit of that predictability. I do like watching things on demand, you get a fraction of the commercials that way.
