Title: Forever in this Heart

Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,180
Summary: Dakotah thinks on his future.
Author’s Note: Written for the prompt of:  "We'll live forever, forever in this heart in mine." Also, it’s a bit rambling and directionless, sorry about that.  Blame it on the cold meds.

He often wondered if things might go wrong.  Either one of them could be swept from this world they shared without a moment’s notice, leaving the other behind to deal with the aftermath.  Dakotah knew the pain of being left behind, it had happened to him more than once over the two and a half centuries he’d survived.  It was one of the drawbacks to being a vampire.  But Sierra?  Could she survive if he was taken from her?

Dakotah believed the answer to be yes.  She was a strong and capable woman when he’d met her, and she had only grown more so over their handful of years together.  No ordinary woman could love a man like him that they both knew to be true.  But to raise their half- human, half-vampire child in addition to being the wife of a night dweller, that took a woman of impressive skill and patience.  His wife was a rare sort and he dreaded the day he’d lose her.

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as thoughts of his witchy wife entered his mind.  She was a redheaded devil, that woman, but that only made her more enticing from his point of view.  Sierra kept her boys – himself and their son, Austen – on a short leash, never hesitating to rein them in when they crossed the line.  Which, to be honest, was more often than he cared to admit to.  Austen was a good kid, but a toddler with fangs wasn’t an easy thing to deal with.

Just ask his mother.

That was another thing he worried about.  Since their son was a dhampir, he’d have a much longer life than his mother, even though he’d never live as long as his father.  They would both lose the most amazing woman they’d ever known long before they’d lose each other.  It was inconceivable to him that he’d even found a woman to love, let alone one he married and spawned a child with.  For all his years, he’d been told it was impossible, that procreation in their state was against the laws of nature.

It was obvious that nature hadn’t been informed of this, because this child – his child! – ran rampant throughout the house, chasing the cat and leaving chaos in his wake.

Austen chose that moment to stick his head of dark curls into the den, a grin firmly in place.  “Papa?”

His voice was tiny and high pitched, as that of a child should be.  It would be years before his innate instincts kicked in, bringing the urge to hunt and the need for blood on a more regular basis.  He already stalked the cat, a playful game of hunter and hunted that would eventually end in the furry creature’s demise if they weren’t careful.  “Cats are our friends,” he had told his son a few nights ago.  “We must never snack on them.”  The boy had reluctantly agreed, although he was certain the point would need reinforcing over the years. How could his soft-hearted wife cope with their son draining the family pet in a fit of hunger?  It boggled his mind.

“Yes my son?”

“I miss mama.”

The vampire lowered himself until he was on an even level with his young son.  “She shall return soon, Austen.  Your mother and her sister have gone on a shopping expedition and will be home by morning.”

It was the only complaint that Sierra had about his condition.  If she felt the urge to drag their child along with her, then there was little issue.  However, if she and her sister, Cheyenne, wanted some adult time, it was more complicated.  Being a dhampir, Austen was a daywalker unlike his father who was chained to the night.  Sierra – and Cheyenne – took it in stride and either toted the child along with them or did as they were doing tonight and made for a late night outing.

Viva Las Vegas.  Twenty-four hour shopping could be a blessing and a curse.

One day in the near future, he’d have to engage in a long discussion with their son about all of this.  How he was destined to live a longer life than any of his friends or loved ones.  That he was going to develop certain personality quirks as his mother called them, and learn how to control them.  Prepare him for the many losses and heartaches ahead of him.  But one thing he would not do, however, was teach his son not to love.  He’d assumed that a vampire’s life was to be lonely and without the comfort of close relationships and he’d suffered for it, right up until he’d met Sierra.  She’d changed all of that for him, brought him back into the daylight, so to speak, and made his eternity one worth living.

Although he knew that loving a mortal was a risk, one that never ended well, he wanted for his son to live a full life.  And that meant happiness as well as pain, love and death, success and failure.  It was the only gift he could really give him and he intended to make certain that he did.  You can never truly live until you have both loved and lost and learned how to move on after.
Sierra had once said to him, “You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope...I have loved none but you.” Her words, a quote from her favorite author, as well as the inspiration for their child’s name, had struck him in his core.  That she felt their love was comprised of agony and hope had unsettled him, gave him to better understand the mortal mind.  She knew what she was getting into all along.

It was in that moment that he realized he’d never truly lose her because she’d live on forever, in his heart and his soul.  He’d made her a silent promise then and there to always love her and carry her spirit within him.  Both for his sake and for that of their son.

He looked at his watch. It was nearing one o’clock in the morning and she should be home soon.  Every minute she was away was a minute he spent wishing she were near.  It made him worry that things had indeed gone wrong and that he’d be solely responsible for raising their son.  Austen needed her to teach him what it was like to be mortal, to keep him on the path of light and not that of the darkness.  And Dakotah needed her as well, to help him retain his tenuous hold on his humanity, tiny little spark that it was.

She was all that was good and true in his life and he wanted her home.  Two more hours.  Another smile cracked his face.  A mortal making a vampire wait.  Who would have ever believed that to be possible?

And he would wait.  Until she returned, until she passed into the ether, until they were reunited in another life, another time.  Her memory and his love would endure.
