Author’s Note: 100-in-100 Day 5.  I’m so freaking behind.

“You shouldn’t ever look a Romani in the eye,” Andrej said in an effort to distract those brilliant green eyes currently boring into his soul.  Zayne had been watching him, staring at him, for nearly thirty minutes now and it was becoming a little unnerving.

Reyes blinked, dark lashes fluttering over the emerald orbs.  “What the hell are you talking about, Zek?”

“We Rom have mystical powers of hypnosis and persuasion.  Look too long into these eyes and your soul will become mine.”  Andrej batted his eyes, trying for whimsy and feeling like a fool.  Then, seeing his partner still gazing at him, confused, he chuckled.  “You were staring, Zayne.”

“What?”  He blinked again, looking around the room for the first time in a half hour or more.  “No I wasn’t.  Crazy ass gypsy boy.”

Leaning forward, Andrej placed an elbow on the edge of his desk, resting his chin in his hand.  Unblinking, he stared at his partner, forcing himself to catch and hold that dazzling gaze.  “Really?”

Zayne licked his lips and drummed his fingers on the desktop under them.  “Really,” Reyes said, fidgeting in his seat.  “Quit looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”  He held back the smile that was building.  “Like you were looking at me earlier?”

“No,” he denied, drawing the word out into a lengthy protest of its own.

Andrej leaned into his hand, bringing his face closer to that of his partner’s.

“Okay, okay,” Zayne announced to the nearly empty room.  “I was staring, all right?  But not like that, not like you’re doing to me right now.”

Zeklos lifted his chin from his hand and got comfortable in his chair.  “Oh?  And how was I staring at you just now?”

“All creepy like,” he said, giving a full body shiver.

“You do realize that that’s exactly how you came off, too, right?”  He knew better than to say what next came to mind, but it was getting late and his powers of self-censoring were weak.  Weaker than his powers of persuasion anyway.  “Either that or like you wanted to ask me to prom.”

“What?”  The timbre of Zayne’s voice lifted into the highest octave his vocal cords could reach by the end of the word.  “Shut your mouth, you ass.”

“Only if you tell me why you were staring.”

Zayne became really quiet, a frown settling on his face as he thought through the question.  “It’s your eyes,” he said finally.

“My eyes?  What’s wrong with them?”

“Nothing,” Reyes reassured him.  “They’re just so… blue.  And surrounded by all that dark hair they’re just plain…”

Plain what?  Bizarre?  “Come on, Reyes, don’t leave me hanging here.  Just what?”

Laughing softly, Reyes shook his head.  “The first word that came to mind was bewitching.  Which, I think, is fitting, considering.”

“I’m not a witch,” Andrej stated, voice quiet.

“No, but you sure have the air of one about you sometimes.  Especially in interrogation.  I swear I can feel the power rolling off of you.  It’s both frightening and reassuring.”

Zeklos tilted his chair back, crossing his arms over his chest.  “You think I practice witchcraft?  We’re not in the Old Country any longer.”

“No,” he said, waving a hand in the air.  “I think you’re much too progressive and modern for that but… you have a definite aura of something otherworldly about you.  I can’t explain it, I just know it’s there.  Reminds me not to piss you off too much.”

“You watch too many movies, Reyes.”  Smiling, Andrej lowered his hands into his lap.  “Power like that doesn’t exist in the real world.”

Old habits die hard.  He’d discovered that while expunging all the superstitions of his homeland from his being.  And then some things he wasn’t willing to take chances with, no matter how backward and Old World they may be.  His thumb brushed along the lower edge of his right pocket, gliding over the slight ridge of the protection talisman he always carried on his person, even when he was off duty.  That piece of copper etched with both his and Reyes’ initials and set with sunstone.

He flicked his bewitching blue eyes upwards and met Zayne’s entrancing green ones.  Reyes could believe what he liked, but the truth was that he did what he had to in order to keep them both safe.  And if that was witchcraft then so be it.
