Title: Just Guilty
Fandom: Romani Detective Original Fic
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos + Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,030
Summary: A sleepy Reyes leads Andrej to confess his secrets.
Author’s Note: From this prompt: Original fiction, M/M: “You are my guilty pleasure.”  Yeah, so of course, this is exactly where my brain went. Sorry, I’m not sorry.  Although, it is a bit maudlin, so I am sorry about that.  Also, this is probably the easiest 1k words I’ve written in a long time, so hopefully there aren’t any glaring errors within.  Hah.

“How do you eat that?”

Reyes licked the last remnants of ketchup from his fingers and gave his partner an inquisitive look.  “What do you mean?  It’s just a burger.”

That was pretty much the point, as far as Zeklos was concerned.  “I don’t know.  It’s just so… unhealthy.”

“And that’s why it’s so damn tasty.”  Grinning, Reyes held up a fry, as if using it to make a point.  “What can I say?  Junk food is a guilty pleasure.  We’re on the run so much during the day, it’s hard to eat right all the time.”

Then, on nights like this, when they were stuck on a stakeout, it was even more difficult.  It’s not like Reyes didn’t take care of himself though, because he absolutely did.  He even had the six-pack abs to prove it.  Andrej figured that he could cut his partner a little slack since Reyes did make a point to combat the greasy food.  “Okay, so you have a point.”

Stretching his arms over his head, Reyes turned those bright green eyes on him.  “What about you?  You have any guilty pleasures I don’t know about?”

His eyes skittered along the length of Reyes’ lean torso, his memory recalling every inch of caramel colored skin that lay beneath that tattered grey t-shirt.  “Not really,” he lied.

“Mmmm,” Reyes murmured.  “Mind taking the first watch?  That burger’s left me feeling a bit sleepy.”

No doubt it had.  “Yeah, of course.”

Zayne stretched again, invading Andrej’s space in the driver’s seat, before settling back against the headrest with his eyes closed.  Within minutes, Reyes was sound asleep, soft snores filling the inside of the car.  Zeklos smiled, admiring how innocent his partner looked in the throes of slumber.

Andrej couldn’t have said how long he’d been watching out the window, not seeing a damn thing, but it probably hadn’t been nearly as long as it felt.  The pitfalls of stakeouts were the long, boring hours where nothing of note happened.  Sometimes, you got a bit of excitement, but so far, tonight wasn’t shaping up to be one of those nights.  So when Reyes shifted in his seat and slumped against Zeklos, it took Andrej by surprise.  With a quiet, startled noise, he jumped in his seat, before realizing it was only Zayne.

Chuckling at his own edginess, Zeklos adjusted his seat so that he leaned back a touch further than he had before.  Reyes responded by snuggling into Andrej’s chest, sighing contentedly.  Zeklos felt his chest tighten in a mixture of fear and excitement.  Breathing slowly, he forced himself to relax and enjoy the moment while he could.  After all, Reyes wouldn’t have a clue if Andrej simply sat and watched him sleep, right?   Even if he did wake up right now, there’d be no shame.  Each had fallen asleep on the other at one point during their long partnership, so this wasn’t something unusual.

What was unusual was Zeklos’ sudden rush of emotion.  He’d long known that he was in love with his partner and, most days, he hid it well enough.  But times like this, in the still of the night when there were no witnesses, it became harder to keep those feelings at bay.  A dark curl spiraled across Reyes’ forehead, begging to be touched.  Zeklos was tempted to give in, to lift that curl between his fingers, to smooth it back against his hair.

No, no – he couldn’t violate his partner’s personal space like that, even if Reyes had more than violated his own by snoozing on his shoulder.  In an effort to make himself more comfortable, Andrej moved the arm Zayne was resting against, causing the sleeping man to readjust again.  He fell into line against Zeklos’ body, hot breath warming linen-covered skin.   Zeklos’ breath caught, the fading scent of Reyes’ cologne filling his nose.

“God,” he muttered.  He curled his arm around his partner, pulling him close into his side.  “You’re going to kill me one of these days, Zayne.”

Reyes replied with a sleepy grunt, snuggling into the warmth of Andrej’s body.  With his free hand, Zeklos traced the curve of Zayne’s sleeping face, cupping is cheek then down along the strong line of his jaw.  He was the most handsome man Andrej had ever known, and at times, also the most infuriating.  Whoever said ‘love is blind’ sure knew what they were talking about.

“I have a confession,” Zeklos whispered to his napping partner.  “I lied to you.  There is one guilty pleasure I indulge in that you can’t ever know about.”  Andrej ran his fingers through Reyes’ hair, teasing the twists of sleep-matted silk.  Resting his head against the tousled mass of his partner’s tresses, he closed his eyes, breathing in the air lying dormant between them.  “It’s you, Zayne.  You are my guilty pleasure.”

“Argh, how long have I been out?”  Zayne rubbed at his eyes with the heels of his hands.

Zeklos looked at his watch.  “About four hours.”

“Gah, why didn’t you wake me?”  Reyes shook his head, trying to clear the lingering tendrils of sleep.

“It’s fine,” Andrej shrugged, not wanting to admit to the truth.  “You didn’t miss anything.”

Reyes glared at his partner for a long moment.  “Doesn’t matter, you should have let me take my turn at the boring stuff.”

Forcing himself to meet Reyes’ gaze, Zeklos waved at the front of the car.  “You were out cold.  I don’t think I could have woken you even if I’d tried.  For a minute, I was beginning to think they’d spiked your burger with something.”

Chuckling, Zayne patted Andrej on the head.  “Nah, just too much good food.  Is it time to get the heck out of here yet?”

Zeklos checked his watch, although he already knew exactly what time it was.  “I think we can call it a night.  Want me to drop you off at your place?”

“You’d have to come get me,” Reyes said, rubbing his face with a hand.  “My car’s still at the station.”

“Wouldn’t be the first time,” he agreed.  “So home, sleeping beauty?”

Reyes grinned and Zeklos’ heart fluttered.  “Yeah, prince charming, take me home.”

This is so lovely! I think you do maudlin beautifully. I loved the emotions you conveyed here, the intimacy between the men, one-sided as it was, lol. Poor Zek. I sure hope things work out for the boys one of these days.

And yet the building tension between them is so delicious I almost hope it doesn't, hehe.

Almost.

:DDD

Thank you! And ugh - I was having a day yesterday. I think I projected all my angst onto poor Zeklos. :D Er, I'm going to plead the fifth on the last part of that. :)

Guh, I know, right? Andrej's so smitten and Zayne's so oblivious and it's so wonderful... but something's gotta give, right?

THANK YOU!

Aw, I'm sorry to hear you had a hard day, but I love that it translated into such a beautiful ficlet! :DDD I'm selfish like that. ;)

I hope today was better, though! ♥

Eh, that's life, right? But thank you. :)

Hahaha... I've long used my writing for just that purpose. So, I'm happy to see it appreciated it. I'm not very good at coping with things, so I make my characters do it instead. :D

Much better, thank you. :)

Mmm, that's the awesome thing about characters and writing, isn't it? It's such a convenient outlet for when life throws us lemons. And it's so effective too! Rarely do I come away from a writing session feeling worse than when I first sat down. I love writing. *happy sigh* Keeps me sane. :D

Exactly. You can kill of whomever is ticking you off and still have them around later, when you're not so angry anymore. LOL

I totally agree. It's the best therapy for me outside of yoga. :D

Oh, gosh, I love yoga. I've been a terrible slacker, though. I need to pick back up on that pronto!

So do I. I'm a terrible klutz and when I first started, it was a HUGE joke with my husband. He likes to try and push me over in my asanas now. LOL

Get back at it! I find it so relaxing and refreshing, especially first thing in the morning. Changes my whole day. :)

I'm thinking I should invest in a yoga mat. Usually I just use the carpet in my bedroom, but now that I'm back to traveling... who knows what's in that carpet, or when it was last cleaned, right? The idea of putting my face against it makes me shiver a little, lol. XD

I guess I can get those at Walmart, right?

You absolutely should, even for home. It's much too easy to slide and find yourself falling on carpet. But OMG - HAHAHA. Yeah. :D And especially since my husband's started working in a hotel... *shudders*

I would think so. I've seen them at Target, so I'm sure Wal-Mart would carry them, too. And they're not too expensive, I think mine was less than $20 (but it's been like 6 years since I got it).

(I just checked online at Walmart and they have them as cheap as $7.)

Wow, $7! You're waving your magical discount wand again, aren't you? :DDD

I must be! Got to admit, I was shocked when I saw how cheap they were at Walmart! LOL *makes note*
