Title: Untilted WIP
Fandom: Tigan Detective Original Fic
Pairing: Andrej Zeklos + Zayne Reyes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,104
Summary: The girls figure out Andrej's secret. Zayne is oblivious as ever. Written for the Thursday Trope prompt at 1_million_words for this week's prompt of: crush blush.
Author's Note: This is an excerpt from a current WIP, so it won't make any actual sense taken out of context. Just know that Zayne and Andrej are partners as are Hilary and Trish. The four are working on a case in an unusual sort of setting.
Reyes held a finger to his lips, indicating silence as they approached the room he’d been sharing with Trish. Leaning into the door, he listened for a few long seconds before shaking his head. “Nothing,” he mouthed.
Whipping the key card out of his pocket, he dipped it into the reader and then pulled it out quickly as the light lit green. Pushing the door open with a flourish, he opened his mouth to yell in surprise when actual shock overtook him. Trish lay on her side, smile lighting up her face. She wore nothing but an oversized t-shirt that was riding high on her firm thighs.
“Can I help you,” she asked, smile growing wider. “Or is my husband suddenly jealous of a little outside attention?”
Zayne’s mouth opened and closed again, without a single word exiting. He was beginning to look like a fish out of water and the thought tickled Zeklos’ funny bone. “He was worried about you, Trish.”
She turned her gaze towards the other male detective and chuckled. “But neither of you were?”
He couldn’t deny that he had been worried, but that didn’t mean he had to admit to it. “Hilary trusted you and I trust her. I wasn’t going to worry until I had reason.”
“Okay, you can stop making me look like an overbearing asshole any time now,” Reyes said.
This time, when Trish laughed, the sound filled the room and bounced off the walls. “You’re a good man, Zayne Reyes, even when you’re being an absolute controlling male jerk. But it’s what makes you so good at what you do. I bet even Zek likes it when you go all cave man on him.”
“Right,” Hilary agreed. “Doesn’t everyone love a big, powerful man when they take charge? Even an equally dominant guy like Andy’s got to appreciate that kind of authority.”
Startled at being brought back into the conversation in this manner, Zeklos grasped for an appropriately sarcastic comment. If only his mind hadn’t flashed onto their earlier kiss and the kind of things that ‘going caveman’ and ‘dominant’ had inspired in his overworked, undersexed brain. “What? Not on your life, I hate it when he pulls rank and acts like an ass.”
He could feel the heat creeping up his neck, passing out of the safety zone allotted by his collared shirt. He searing lust that had risen during his earlier encounter with Reyes had roared back to life, confusing and embarrassing him with its intensity. Why had he gone after Reyes a second time? That had been his biggest mistake of the night, of his career, to be honest. One taste of the gorgeous Texan’s mouth and he knew he couldn’t ever get enough.
“You’re so full of shit,” he heard Zayne say. “I never pull rank on you. And when I try, you always ignore me and dump a bunch of intellectual baloney to cover up your insubordination.”
“Insubordination? Is it really disobedience when you’re being an idiot?” He shook his head, throwing his hands in the air. One of these days he was going to have to come clean to with his partner, but tonight wasn’t the right moment to drop that particular bomb. Reyes had learned enough about him already. But heaven help him, this continual back and forth bickering between them was as good of foreplay as he’d had in years. “God, you are infuriating.”
“Andrej,” Hilary said, the question in her voice uncertain. “You okay?”
“Of course he’s okay,” Zayne said, giving his partner a passing glare. “He’s just pissed because he knows I’m right on this.”
“Uh, Zayne,” Trish said, drawing his attention to her again. She’d sat up on the bed and was leaning forward, hands on her knees. “I think there’s something actually wrong.”
“Nothing’s wrong,” Zeklos stated, a growl underlying his frustration. “I’m fine.” Why couldn’t he actually be fine and not two seconds from losing his cool?
“You’re turning twelve shades of red,” Hilary pointed out a little too eagerly. “It’s an awfully nice color on you, but it’s beginning to worry me.”
“Bah,” Zayne said, dismissing their concern. “He always gets red like that when he’s royally ticked off. Trust me, I’ve seen him go apoplectic often enough.”
“Excuse me,” Andrej announced, pushing past Hilary and taking long strides towards the door. He’d had more than he could take and had to remove himself from the presence of the other detectives before he was completely humiliated. “I have to get out of here.”
“Zek, wait.”
Closing his eyes and counting to ten, he slowed his forward motion and breathed. In. Out. In. “Can it wait, Hilary?” Dear lord, please let it wait.
“No, it can’t.” She looked at Trish and taking her nod as encouragement, rested a hand on his shoulder. “How did we miss this?”
“I know, right?” Trish giggled like a six year old and Hilary joined her. “It’s suddenly so glaringly obvious. You’d think I would have picked up on it by now even if you hadn’t.”
“What did you miss?” Reyes was lost, looking between the female officers for an explanation. “And why is it so obvious?”
“Men,” Hilary and Trish said together, garnering an eye roll from Reyes and the look of death from Zeklos.
“Don’t do this to me,” he whispered.
“I think it’s too late,” Hilary whispered back, inclining her head towards Trish. “Sorry.”
“What you’re missing, Reyes, is that your partner is crushing on you. Hard.” Another little giggle escaped her before she could continue. “I swear, you pick up on anything female that even gives you the briefest of glances but you miss this? It’s criminal.”
“We missed it too,” Hilary reminded her.
“Good point,” Trish said.
“Kill me now,” Andrej said, slapping a hand across his forehead. “I’m leaving now and you will not stop me.”
“Zek, wait,” Reyes started, before a hand on his arm stopped him.
“Let him go,” Hilary said. “I think he’s rather mortified at the moment.”
“No kidding,” Trish said, watching their partner and friend walk out the door. “I had no idea, I swear, but the minute he started blushing – I knew for sure. He’s really adorable when he’s embarrassed, isn’t he?”
“You two are crazy,” he said. “He’s not crushing on me – hard or otherwise. If he was, he would have told me earlier after…”
“After?” Trish’s grin turned into a leer.
“Nothing. Never mind. I need to go find my partner and start to solve this fucking case already.” The door slammed behind him, letting the women know that the discussion was over.

Date: 2015-02-14 09:00 pm (UTC)I'm sorry I'm so erratic at reading these, and there are clearly chapters I need to find and devour, but I am most amused and delighted by this one! LOVE IT! ;-)

Date: 2015-02-16 09:48 pm (UTC)Don't even worry about it. And actually, there are only a couple bits and pieces I've written about these two so far, and I try to tag things appropriately so you can find them with ease. Hah. This above though was taken out of context from my WIP because it fit the trope challenge.
YES! I am so happy that you're amused by this! I'm thinking you'll be even more so when you find out where they are and what's going on. THANK YOU!
Check HERE for the rest dealing with these two.
